This is a discussion thread titled "Tundra Brake TSB", within the Brakes forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Originally posted by TundraGA Okay, they replaced my rear drums. They said they were "out of round". Also, they did some type of axle test to see if it was okay and it was.
I tested them and they seem smooth with no vibration. The svc guy did say the the new drums were designed from the 4Runner's so they are beefier and able to handle high temps and high use.
I'll cross my fingers but with new front and rear brakes including brake assemblies...is there anything left? I just hope the new stuff doesn't warp.
That's what I had hoped and the rear drums were the beefier drums and they already turned them again and I still have a shake, but not all the time, I am going to get the alignment checked myself this Sat.
Yes, I asked for the alignment to be done as part of the brake TBS seeing how much stuff they have to take off and replace. They claimed to have done the alignment but could not produce the spec sheet. I drove it a few days and took it back, told them it pulled to the right and the petal felt soft, they did alignment and bled lines while I waited at N/C.

Well, I hope it works for me. If you having yours turned again, then there has to be something wrong with the drum pads...right? If it's the drums themselves then why aren't 4runners having any problems?
Do you have the shake when you are braking and if so, is it felt in the steering wheel or seat?

Yes it shakes when braking sorta like a rear end hop. I don't notice anything in the steering wheel. I think that the drums are still screwed up. It is worse evertime I drive it. It also seem to happen most when I am going faster.

No it still is shaking during breaking. I have been to busy to take it back in, I do think that when I do i am going to tell them that it will be the last chance to fix it. I am going to go to Toyota if it starts again.

I would make sure they replace your rear drums (not turn them again) and replace your front rotors. I've heard from several Toyota employees that they have been instructed to do one possible fix during each visit (to save $). The more times you go in, the more they are supposed to do. Pretty soon you'll have a new truck...piece by piece.
So far so good on mine after they replaced the rear drums.
I haven't been on this page in a while. The new set up of having your vehicle entered and the ability to look at all TSB's and aftermarket stuff for your particular vehicle is outstanding. You guys are doing a great job here!
Question re: TSB BR003 & BR004, brakes for 2002 Tundra. My dealer has not done any of these TSB's they said since the Tundra was first introduced. I was hoping they were up to speed here with this process. It's hard for me to believe that in a town as big as Cincinnati (2 million) that they have no knowledge of the Tundra brake problems.
Anyway, I made an appt. to take my truck in for an "evaluation" next week. I'm anticipating some resistance here. Can anyone offer me some advice when dealing with the dealer on the brake TSB?
Just got mine back from the shop. They replaced front & rear no questions asked. Took them 1 day, dropped it off as soon as the service dept. opened and left it over night, picked it up on lunch the following day. The brake peddle was not as "touchy" but I didn't have to push all the way to the floor either, feels good to me! Both upper control arms were banged up a little but not as bad as some others on TS I was totally suprised the way they acted. I mean they were like thanks for letting us do the TSB for you. T headquaters must not want a recall on these Tundras. I was prepared to do war w/ them after reading other members horror stories. But thanks to all who raised hell over this issue in the begininng it has paved the way for rest of us Tundraonians!! Hopfully this will be the "fix" we have all been looking for...
It's been a little over a month since the brake TSB was done on my Tundra. I've had no issues whatsoever. The brakes work better than when it was new, probably because of the bigger caliper.

I took mine to the dealer to have the TSB done at 24K miles. They test drove it and admitted that there was brake shudder. I then mentioned the TSB and they said they already new about it, but never actually said that they were going to replace the calipers. After being without my truck for the better part of the day I went to pick it up and they had only turned the warped roters, replaced the pads and topped off the fluid at no charge. Granted, the ride is better and with no vibration in the front end for now, but I think they just fixed it temporarily just to get me pass the 36K mile mark. With my complaint in mind shouldn't they had done the TSB work?
They are supposed to perform the TSB. The TSB specifically says: "Under certain usage conditions, some Tundra trucks may exhibit front brake vibration. Improved brake caliper assemblies have been introduced to correct this problem." This quote is right off the TSB. In addition, they have to follow the diagnosis procedure which is also documented in the TSB. The procedure should isolate the drum brakes from the rest of the system. During the diagnosis, if they've felt the vibration from the rear brakes, they are suppose to do the TSB BR003-02. If they've felt the vibration from the front brakes, they are suppose to do the TSB BR004-02. If the vibration is coming from both, then they are suppose to do both TSB's.
I'd go back and insist that they perform the TSB as this is a campaign by Toyota which they have to follow which is why it was released in the first place.
