BrakesDiscussions about the brake system in your vehicle and brake products.
This is a discussion thread titled "Tundra Brake TSB", within the Brakes forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Factory guidelines require trailer brakes when the trailer is over 1000#.
My '01 has 34k and never any brake problems. I occasionally tow a 5200# trailer--with good trailer brakes.

I have never had brake problems other then warpage until today when i was changing my shoes/pads and after i came back from getting the rotors/drums turned one of the pistons came nearly all the way out of the drivers side caliper and will not go back in....
I haven't been on this forum for quite a while - got scared to read about everyone's problems. Well now I got one - rear brake vibration ('00). I don't want to beat a dead horse - but searches done come up with a million posts.
All was fine up to 30K miles then the brakes started vibrating. I went back 3 times, the last time everything was replaced: rotors, calipers, pads and drums. And it's back again. Last time I was almost out of warranty and the service advisor told me they cover their parts and labor for one year. So now I'm looking at my 4th brake job within 1 year. I'm changing the brakes sooner than changing my oil.
Has anyone had success with getting this fixed? As far as I know they have already done all TSBs. Please no flames.
Hey buddy, I have a 2002 that I have also had worked on (4) times now -- but I would by lying if I said it is 100% fixed. After the first (3) times which were all for the front brakes, they finally decided to do the TSB for the rear brakes too. It's been okay for a while now, but at 34,500 miles, I am coming up on the end of my warranty. Each time I had problems was when I went camping up in the mountains and was hauling a pretty full load.
When I looked at the payload capacity for my truck (somewhere in the 1300 lb. range, because it's a 4X4 Limited), I realized that I was at about 75% or more of that capacity each time the brakes got too hot and started to fail. Anyway, I'm planning to use aftermarket rotors and pads the next time I need new brakes. I don't think the stock front pads/rotors dissipate heat that well. What really stinks is that since my warranty is ending soon, I feel like I am going to have to spend the $1200-1500 or whatever for an extended warranty.
OK, so I finally called the servcie dept. to discuss my list of items I wanted looked at. He tells me that the brakes are a VIN specific fix. They will replace the front pads first and then if the vibration persists, they will do the caliper. I'd like to get as much done free as possible. esp. having the extended warranty. Its bad enough I have to pay $209 for a 15,000 mile service.
What do you think about the VIN info?
Heres my list:
15,000 MILE CHECK UP
1. CLUNK NOISE AFTER HARD STOP (REAR)
2. CLUNK NOISE WHEN REVERSING FROM STOPPED POSITION. (FRONT)
3. BELT SQUEAL SOMETIMES WHEN STARTING.
3. REAR BRAKE VIBRATION (REPLACE REAR DRUMS)
TOYOTA TSB #BR003-02
4. BRAKE VIBRATION FRONT (REPLACE W/IMPROVED CALIPER) TOYOTA TSB #BR004-02
5. SUSPENSION BALL JOINT FREE PLAY INSPECTION
TOYOTA TSB #PG027-02
4. ROTATE TIRES
5. IDLE ROUGH
6. HESITATION DURING ACCELERATION (DURING FIRST TO SECOND GEAR SHIFT).
7. TEST TRAILER WIRING HARNESS
TOYOTA TSB #AX006-02
I have a 02 4x4 with 24k miles and it has been in the shop 3 times for brakes and once not long after after I bought it for rear axle seal leaking . The truck is starting to shake and bounce again when braking, I am thinking of legal action.
Blah this isn't sounding encouraging. I love my truck, except for the brake issue. I just spent $1500 last year for a nice cap and rack so I don't want to have to get a different truck.
AZBRIAN - thanks for your response. I could "almost" see getting these vibrations if I were towing in the mountains, but honestly this truck sees very light duty. Mostly just commuting on a rural road. One set of drums didn't last a month - about 1,000 miles! I've never heard of such a thing. I'm floored. My only ideas are maybe they're putting the lugs on with an air wrench or maybe the brake distribution valve is stuck.
I wish you luck dlee - last time I was in I had all that and calipers done. It took a couple months to come back, but at least it wasn't a couple weeks.
First is the vibration severe, I have an 03 with the new parts, and I get some vibs occasionally, not where the whole truck is shaking. I think one problem with the calipers (my opinion) is that they don't give the truck extra rear brake, so adjusting the LSPV may help a bit. Also make sure they cut the rotors using an on car lathe, if not the chance of the vibs coming back are much higher. SOme vibs are going to be expected, but if the steering wheel shakes hard then you've got problems.

Can they also do the same for the drums? I would be willing to have that done as a last resort on mine before I give up all hope an trade it in...Mitch
I just picked up a 2001 tundra TRD 4x4 with 31,000 miles. The truck is smooth with no vibration problems at all but after reading all these posts about brake problems I think it might be like waitng for a bomb to go off I just sold a 95 T-100 4x4 that was a great truck with never the kind of problems I read here about tundras I hope I didn't make a mistake in buying this truck I guess time will tell

My dealer did the brake TSB on my 4WD '02 before I purchased it.
12K later no problems so far.
I do get a vibration from the rears when the bed is empty.
I can live with that.
Hey hirschg, do you miss you T100 yet?
They are great trucks!
