Just picked my truck up.....had to order all of the parts for the TSB....service writer said she would call when they arrive early next week. Mine must be the first this dealer has done.....said they had to order a speacial tool to replace the calipers. This is the largest Toyota Delaership in Baton Rouge too. They did not even give me a peep. Only inconveinience is having to bring it a second time......but the dealer is only about 15 mins away. Not a big deal.
Originally posted by TD I wonder if the rotors are part of the caliper assembly listed on the invoice?
I got the entire package done too, and I seem to remember the rotors being a separate line item from the caliper assemblies. I'd have to check my invoice, but I'm pretty sure this is the case.
You mentioned that the surface seemed smooth and machined with no edges, etc. If you are not sure about your rotors being new or old, the real question is what did the edges and center of the rotors look like?
Here is a picture of an old vs. new rotor/caliper assembly. You can definitely see the difference. The old rotos only had 11k miles on them too.
You should be able to tell by looking, and if you did get new rotors, I would insist that it be documented on your invoice. CYA baby...if it's not in writing, it didn't happen!

I think they are the same size.
When I pasted the two pics into one, and then zoomed in to get as much detail as possible, I think the old caliper pic just turned out larger. By looking at the rotors, you can sorta see that the new rotor is smaller in the pic when they are actually the same size.
Just a trick on the eyes I guess.

I too thought the same thing when I saw the picture of the new and old calipers. They look smaller, especially with out the extension on the upper right side of the caliper.
My understanding, after repeated discussions with my Service Manager during brake servicing, was that the old assembly just wasn't capable of dissipating the extreme heat being generated. Back then, the solution recommended by one of the engineers was to install a larger assembly, with a larger mass to help absorb and dissipate the heat away from the pads and rotor.
Anyway, in the past, my brake problems occurred after driving in the mountains either fully loaded or while towing my small pop-up. I took my fully loaded truck and trailer hunting in the mountains earlier this month and experienced no problems. I did drop it down into second gear while descending the steeper grades, which I seldom did before as I had always heard the saying that it was cheaper to replace brakes than the transmission, but after all the headaches I’ve gone through with the brakes I decided to change my driving style.
Hopefully, they've finally figured it out. I would think, just based on the cost of parts and labor to perform the TSB that they would have done extensive testing prior to releasing this fix. . . I guess only time will tell.
Yeah, trick photography. It's what they do with the breast enhancement photos...
Look at the lugs, notice how the ones on the 'new' rotor appear smaller?

I just left the dealership and will have the TSB done tomorrow.
I had them look at the brakes and they said the front were toast and they would put on new rotors per good will. I asked if the saw the TSB and they said no and checked and still couldn't find it.
I asked if they can get on the web so when they said yes I used it and logged on to TS and showed them the TSB.
They then got the TSB from Toyota and ordered the kit but meanwhile they finished putting on the new rotors only and asked me to return tomorrow and they will give me a car while they install the kit.
Does anyone know if the new kit has the same rotors as our old one's? I can't find fault with them as they started installing the rotors before I could prove there was a TSB.
This is the first Tundra they have done so will give them the benefit of doubt that they were unaware of the problem.
Just had the front brake TSB done and am very happy with the results so far.
The dealer (Sloane Toyota, Glenside, Pa.) was very cooperative and put me in a rental car for a week while waiting for all of the parts to arrive.
jaskolka-I guess mine was the first as I picked it up the day you took yours in.
I really appreciate all of the info. from the TS people

Can someone take a picture and post it so we can see the difference between the old brake system and the 'new' and improved one (caliper and rotor). I thought, incorrecly, that my 03 had the brake update till yesterday when I read the TSB and found out it was about 5K units after my build

Originally posted by red's tundra How far are you from Concord Toyota? I can't remember how far San Rafael is from there. Dyogim has had his brakes done there and they didn't given him any problems with it. He has a hook up there, but there should be no reason to deny you the TSB work. Sounds like your dealer is full of sh**. Give them a call or PM Dyogim to see if he can recommend a service writer for you to talk to.

i work with Dan Ramelli at concord toyota. those guys are great. never had a question from them when it came to my warranty repairs. i bought my trunk from the walnut creek toyota, but wont have any service done there. my only concern is how long do these brake kits take to order. they had my truck overnight ( i got to drive one of those new matrix.. pretty kewl little car) but they put me back in my truck until the new parts come in. i assume they fix both front and rear??
The parts are taking a little while to get in. The TSB is done based on needs. They may do only your front or rear or they may do both...it depends on where the problem is. The TSB shows how to test for problems with the front or back
My Toyota Dealer has ordered the parts for my truck for this TSB.....I was told they would be in early next week.......bout a week delivery. They are also not changing the rear brakes on my truck.......only the front.
Also....there is a before/after pic in a post a couple days before this one.
Picked up my truck on friday. The dealer (Sloane Toyota, Glenside PA) could not finish the job. The didn't have the tool to remove the bearing. They said that the would not have it until March. All they did was surface the roters and replace the pads. They told me that if the problem returns to bring it back in March. So far I noticed it a little, but that may be my paranoia.
