BrakesDiscussions about the brake system in your vehicle and brake products.
This is a discussion thread titled "Tundra Brake TSB", within the Brakes forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I DID!!! I was tired of the vibration and decided enough was enough. I took my truck to two dealerships a total of eight times. I have an 02 Tundra Access cab V8. The arbitrator just returned his decision in my favor. He awarded replacement or restitution. I opted for restitution.
[quote=mitchr]Does the truck still have to be under warranty?[/QUOTE
I am not sure in your state but, for California the first repair attempt has to have happened before 18,000 mi. This is only w/ arbitration. Lemon law is a little different.

make sure your dealer tightens the brake lines too. i hear that prcedure could be overlooked.
I can't believe I got myself into this. I had a 2001 Sequoia (Wife's daily driver) with nig time brake problems front and back. Replaced leaky seals 2 or 3 times, pads, front rotors turned, then replaced and upgraded and still had problems.
I bought an 03 Tundra, thinking they must have solved the problems by now (before I found this board). Well, 12,500 mi and I'm in for sevice. I've had a light vibration, and low pedal and almost no parking brake, but nothing like what was experienced with the Sequoia.
I asked the service guy to check into any TSB's, but my VIN# is after the one that was recently posted as being in the TSB.
Anybody else having problems with brakes on 03 or 04 after the TSB vin # with the problems?
Hey JT. I'm in Chapel Hill and have an 02 Tundra. I haven't had any real problems with my brakes (other than the fact they don't brake well) but probably want to get both tSB's done before my warranty is out this Oct. It is absurb they built a "heavy-duty" truck and used taco brakes. Were you having any trouble prior to your TSB's being done. were you happy with the work Modern did? Any hassles getting it approved? I have gotten runaround by toyota of Durham before so I doubt I'll trust them to do the work. Thanks, Nicholas

Thank You Everyone for your help and input.

What do you mean, "don't brake well?" The brakes on my '01 have always worked very well, both before and after the TSB*. Two things you might do to improve the braking...either manually adjust the rear brakes or use your parking brake frequently to keep the rears adjusted. And, bleed any air from the brakes, including bleeding the rear brake proportioning valve. I think the bleeding order is RR, LR, proportioning valve, RF, LF...if anyone has a repair manual, pls check this.
*I think the shop did the TSB on mine because they were having a slow week and needed the work...they found just enough runout on the rotors to justify the work.
Ken

Last Sept. coming home from a hunt in Colorado, I experienced a major shudder when I hit the brakes hard (no, it wasn't like the unique pulsing that you get from ABS, it was definitely a prolonged shudder) going from 80 mph to zero. My truck has 30K on it and the front discs looked about 75% worn, so I looked on TS for what discs were working well for you guys..........and then I found this tread.
After reading and reading and reading it, I found my truck fell in the TSB category for larger calipers. Took it in to Manhattan Toyota, and explained about the shudder. And, the seat belts didn't retract well, so I asked them to look at that.
Two days later, I get the truck back not only with new calipers, discs, rotors turned, new backing plates, etc. but also two new great working seat belts. They also replaced the oil sender (another TSB) and to my suprise, the V-belt they said had a small crack in it, so they replaced that as well. How about that for going above and beyond the call???? And no charge for anything. Brakes work great, and this Toyota Tundra owner is back on Cloud 9 again......................(P.S. sure didn't mind the no-cost brake job, either!).
The Hornet had the front OE brakes replaced @ 98,500 miles, the rears still have ~25% left. The truck maybe could have gone XXXK more miles w/o front brake service, but had it done 'cause was in for the so-called "90K" service.
It is totally beyond me why some Tundras have severe brake issues at an early mileage and others don't have any probs at all even high miles. Has anyone really explained this anomaly ???

The only thing I can think of as to why some trucks eat the brakes early and some late, is the type of drivin folks do. For the people who commute a lot, I'd imagine they'd get a lot more miles per pad than folks like me do, who do 70% of my driving in the city, 20% on the highway and 10% offroad. I was suprised that my discs looked as good as they did at 30K, I probably could've pushed it another 10K doin my kinda drivin.
Another thing I just thought of.....why do some folks go thru clutches quickly? Probably same answer PLUS, have you ever seen people who tailgate and keep hitting their brakes (nope, I do NOT resemble that remark, either....I HATE drivers that do that!)? That'd cause em to wear faster than folks who don't bumper sniff.......Anyway, there's all kinds of real good reasons (in other words, I don't believe it's a $64 question at all, it's cause and effect..........in other words.......it ain't the truck's fault for the most part).
Lastly, being an owner of one truck or another over the past 30 years, one thing I've seen hold pretty true across the board....IN GENERAL, trucks go thru front brakes and (all) the tires purty good, lots more than passenger cars do. Anyone getting mileage out of truck front brakes and tires, well, keep doin what you're doin cause you're doin something right (or not being too harsh on you truck, maybe). Hasta.......
I have tried to read as many pages of this 55-page thread and don't come up with clear answer. Is the brake TSB for Tundras only or is this also a Sequoia brake TSB.

No Brake TSB's for an '03 Sequoia, but there was for the '01 & '02 MY. That TSB is BR005-02 REVISED, FRONT BRAKE VIBRATION

I am still dealing with my Tundra's brake problems. I just got back from OC this afternoon and hit some bad traffic. The brakes seemingly gave out on me. It wouldnt stop! This is about 6 months since the first TSB had been performed. So i shot straight over to Kearney Mesa Toyota. I spoke with Scott Buckner. He informed me they would replace the rotors and pads in front and replace the rear drums with a new system they had out.
Since my truck has 66k on it he also informed me this would be the last time he would be able to give me free brakes.
I'll be back in another 10k miles if these ones still dont work!!!
Got the tsb done this past weekend. thanks ts... service manager said that they had tear into the whole front end to replace the calipers and rotors, doesn't sound right. is there more to the tsb? or I'm getting some of that ol' Texas BS?
