BrakesDiscussions about the brake system in your vehicle and brake products.
This is a discussion thread titled "Tundra Brake TSB", within the Brakes forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
... they had tear into the whole front end to replace the calipers and rotors, doesn't sound right. is there more to the tsb? or I'm getting some of that ol' Texas BS?
No BS - the front brake dust shields are effectively trapped behind the front bearing flange, require complete dissassembly to replace with the required "larger opening for caliper" dust shields.
Hey - you get a new wheel bearing, seals, etc as a bonus . . . AND some really large front calipers!
Others awaiting the TSB work beware!
Some less than 100% shops are cutting the old dust shields to fit the new calipers rather than doing the whole dissassembly as per the TSB. Saves a HUGE amount of work, saves lots of time on the job. Beware if you want / need the new bearings, seals, etc.
For anyone that remembers MY TSB thread re: chopping dust shileds w/o authorization . . . I had to replace the upper control arm and BJ on the passenger side to recover from the "dealer" TSB work (large rock hammer to remove upper BJ). Watch you dealer carefully!!!!
I had the first TSB brake job done about a year ago. 02 Tundra LTD, 20,000 miles was in the shop for three days (got a rental car to drive). Now, 9,000 miles later, the situation is recurring. Truck is at the shop today...we'll see about the outcome. Also asked them to fix shaky driver's side mirror, bad leather on driver's seat and corroded wheel. Any bets on the outcome?

I'll be interested on the seat. My seat is cracking on the drivers side as well. However, I have the old style brakes on my 03 and have not experienced the same brake problems others have. I only have 16,000 miles on it, but some people have said it started well before then.
On another subject, if gas keeps going up like it is Toyota can't get the hybrid Tundra out fast enough. Hopefully there won't be as long of a wait and premium price as there is on the Pirus and Honda's.

When I took it in this morning and gave them my litany of complaints, I didn't get any warm fuzzy feeling that all would be well. Other TS threads have indicated that Toyota will fight hard against seat wear complaints. We'll see. I'll post the outcome later today.
Gas in the Boston area is now up to ~$1.95 a gallon average. I've taken to walking a lot more, using my wife's Lexus ES 300, or only driving the Tundra at 55 mph on the MassPike. My average highway MPG is now around 20, but it still hurts to fill the tank.

thanks for the heads up, I've got to rotate my tires, will double check...
now on the parts list for when they did the tsb, did the list the new dust shields?
Yep, it's on the parts list. I didn't read any of your previous posts, so I'm not sure where you are on this TigerT. If you haven't had this work done yet, print out a copy of the TSB for yourself, familarize yourself with what they need to do, then give a copy of it to the dealer BEFORE they start working on your truck, and mention that your expectation is that they fully implement the TSB, dust shields, seals, et. all included.
I simply showed them a copy of the TSB and I think they kinda figured out I had an understanding and an expectation of what work was to be performed. And yep, they replaced my old dust shields, didn't do a hack job on my old ones.
I had the TSB done about a week ago, there was a list of parts on the work order but I didn't give it a lot of scrutiny yet.. I do notice that initially the new brakes aren't as mushy as they used to be, not sure if that's a result of bleeding the lines after the tsb, but hopefully after 15k miles I didn't have that much air in the system... I do like the improvement though..
Well guy's finally got sick of the vibrations from brakes !! I do a lot of highway driving and when braking trying to keep up with traffic I get a lot of vibrations lately and it's not getting any better. The vibrations definitely increase and get more intense the hotter the shoes and rotors get !! And during my commute here with all of the NUTS that alway's seem to be in a hurry to go Nowhere here in the Boston area .
Anyway, I finally broke down and forced myself to try and give a dealer a shot at it and see what they recomend for the fix. I did manage to be able to speak with the technician returning from the test drive of my truck, I wanted to let him know where my lug nut key was , anyway I took advantage of the encounter and asked him what he thought. Well to my surprise he clearly stated that he felt the fronts are vibrating as well as the rears but the fronts are the worst and that he knows that there are TSB's on this and that he has to look them up and compare my VIN# to see if the truck was within the range. So he then brought in the garage for a look and I basically roamed the sales lot thinking all sorts of excuses the dealer was going to come back and say to me. I did conveinently leave some fresh printed copies of all of the brake TSB's I downloaded from this AWESOME site in my console . So after roaming the lot for a while I came around back to the front of the service bay to find my truck back out front, so I said to myself here we go , and then went in to hear the excuses well to my great surprise they stated that they have to order all sorts of parts and that they would call me when the parts come in to perform all of the TSB's that the truck had on it !!!!! So I then asked what kind of parts did it need, and they said ; front bearings, calipers, dustshields, shoes, rotors, brake lines, rear drums and shoes Well for the lack of better words I was very happy !!! But now I hope the job goes well and "I DONT END UP HAVING ANY SIDE AFFECTS LIKE VIBRATIONS OR ANY OTHER BAD ISSUES ??? " Some guy's on this thread have had some bad results
Only time will tell Boy's , wish me luck and I will keep all of you posted on my experience and results of my Brake TSB journey, it should be going in this comming week..............

My front brakes lasted about 10k miles after the TSB before the "insta-warp" (tm) rotors did their thing again. Replaced the rotors with aftermarket cryo-frozen slotted brembo rotors and I'm about to go check them now... 14k miles.. checking not because of any symptoms, but just because.
OK, just got back from checking the pads and rotors... maybe 20% of the pads are worn... so figure 40~50k before I have to replace them.. rotors still look almost new with just very minor scoring from the pads..
Only thing that was needed was to adjust the rear brakes because I don't use my E-brake enough.
My front brake problems started at 5,000 miles. At that time they turned the rotors. The problem returned at 15,100 miles. This time they replaced the front pads and replaced the left front rotor. The problem returned at 15,800 miles. This time they did the front brake TSB only after I showed them the TSB. Now at 28,000 they told me I need new front brake pads and they want me to pay for them. They did say that the pads should last longer then they did but they still don't want to cover it under the warranty.

Pads are usually considered a consumable and not covered under warranty. Although I'd ask to speak to the Toyota factory rep. to see if he'd do anything for you.

Well I brought the truck in for the front brake pads. I told the service manager that this is the forth time in for front brake problems and it should be covered under warranty. The service manager took it for a ride and they replaced the front pads and rotors free of charge.

It's Done Boy's !!! Brake Tsb Both Front & Rear ...
Well guy's; I figured I would post back on this thread when I finally got the TSB's done on my Tundra And I must say that the Dealer performed everything all at the same time same visit Fortunatly, I went to a great dealer and did everything verbatem from the TSB and was willing to print me up the actual TSB's so I could read it !!!!!! Picked up the truck last night from the dealer and the slip said they did the following; As I also looked over the truck pretty well myself to verify ;
Front TSB;
2- New front rotors
4- New brake pads
2- Dust backing plates L & R
2- New Bearings L & R
2- New front calipers L & R
2- Brake lines
2- Seals
2- Retaining Clips
2- Cotter pins
2- Cotter pins ( different part #'s )
1- Brake Fluid
* Misc Bolts and related Hardware.
Rear Brake TSB ;
2- New brake Drums
* They did not state if they replaced the rear shoes though ?? If I get some time I plan on pulling a wheel and checking though. I know they were probably still good though, I am pretty light on my brakes but do tow sometimes in the winter.
*** So far it brakes incredibly smooth and firm, seems to drive fine with no shakes or rattles, that was in about a 50 mile drive this morning. I was so use to the shake when stopping especially at highway speeds, it really felt like a different truck this morning ..............................
I must say the dealer did as they said they would and also turned it around in ONE DAY !!!!! I droped the truck off at 7:30 AM right when they opened and it was ready at 6:00 PM to pick up
It is nice when sometimes we actually win, when and if you get a good dealer, not like the unfortunate sagga on my wife's car that is a complete NIGHTMARE But I do not want to go there right now and bring this post down !!!
Best of luck to all that have to still get this performed on their trucks sometimes we can still win guy's !!!!!
