This is a discussion thread titled "Tundra Brake TSB", within the Brakes forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Originally posted by MMitsock If you are buying a new Tundra, any with a VIN number larger than 5TB**##1#3S340241 has the new brake components already installed (according to the TSB). Does the 3S in that VIN have any signifigance or is it just the last 6 digits? My VIN's last 8 digits are YS117943. Would that qualify?
I just got back from my second trip to the dealer in 8 days about the front brake vibration. Last time I mentioned the TSB and all they did was turn the warped rotors. Well, in just a week and 250 miles they are vibrating again. I took it back and this time I asked them why they did not follow Toyota's own recommendation and fix it per the TSB. This time the tech verified the vibration again and ordered the parts for the rear TSB but not the front. I confronted the service manager with the first page of the BR004-02 TSB and asked him where on this TSB does it say anything about new pads and a shim kit. He said that this doesn't look like a Toyota TSB and that there computers were down and he would have to verify it when their computers came back up. He showed it to one of his lead mechanics and he asked me where I got this. I told him the Internet but didn't say where. I cut off the footer on the page so they couldn't see where I printed it from. He said, "it doesn't look like an official Toyota TSB but it does look real". He also said they didn't have an "02" book so it could be that the mechanic working on my truck didn't know about it. The service manager then completely changed his tune and became very co-operative. He said as soon as his computer was back up he would verify the TSB and order all the necessary parts for both the front and rear brake TSB's so we could get this done under warranty.
I am keeping my fingers and toes crossed that this all works out. It looks like the dealer may actually take care of this after all. God bless the Internet and all you wonderful people on this board! I never would have gotten this far without you. It's amazing what having things on paper can do for you. They just couldn't argue with me anymore because the facts were right there in black and white.

Matt, sounds like the same BS I went through to get my TSB taken care of, and as TundraGA wrote, that is the last time I am ever stepping foot in that dealer's door.
I had the TSB printed out and they looked at it like it was written in Chinese! The techs hadn't heard of it, the service mgr sort of knew about it and I was livid!
Needless to say, when I did my Customer Service Survey on Sunday via the web, I aired all my frustrations for sub-par performance in taken care of my problems in a friendly and timely manner.

Well, I've joined the club in getting the new TSB done on my front brakes... Currently, I've got 41K miles. I had the older brake TSB done about a year ago.
It took the dealership all weekend, but my truck is back, and in good shape. I can see the new calipers, and they are kind of blue-greenish. Anyway, pedal feel is improved, my braking power has gone back up, and my front brakes don't squeal (and vibrate) like they did before. Time will tell if this is a permanent fix.

I heard someone they were dual piston instead of 4.
True?
Or, are they 4 but the pistons are bigger?
Alan, That was similar information to what I was looking for. My '03 was short of the change over by a few thousand units, even though I 'assumed' I was getting the new and improved version. From the pictures I saw it looks like they may still be 4 piston, but smaller, and positioned a bit lower then the current one. But it's hard to tell from the pictures with so many variables, like distance, camera angle, shadows, etc. I'm not is any rush to have them tear apart my truck just yet, I'll wait and see if I'm one of the lucky ones and don't experience any problems.

I have not had any issues with brakes that I know of but am now at the end of my front pads life (21,000 miles) which seems early but the rotors look great. I was about to buy a new set of pads when I started to read this TSB stuff.
I was wondering if excessive pad wear was another aspect that the TSB fixes as opposed to only the vibration (rotor warp). I think the 2 could go together.
I went to the deal a few days ago and had work done on my 2002 Tubdra (vin last six 25969) I came home with what appears to be BR999 not BR00402 and BR00302.
Where can I find the exact info for the TSB so I can go back in and stuff the info in there face?
How should I handle it if I start getting screwed around?
Good news. I went to my local dealership last night around closing on my way home from work to talk to someone about my brakes. I told one of the assistant service managers there my problem and that I knew of the TSB. I also told him I had 46,000 miles but was hoping they may cover it as a goodwill measure. He tells me that the Service manager is very flexible and to come back early in the morning to have the truck looked at. I get there a little after 8 and leave the truck with the same guy. All the while he had a great attitude and was very helpful. I brought along a copy of the TSB, and he thanked me for doing so. I then left. My phone rings at 11 and he tells me that he has put an order in for new calipers, rotors, pads, and so forth and that they will be covering everything under warranty as an act of goodwill. I was holding my breath all morning and now exhaled. I thanked him a couple of times and went to pick up my truck. The parts should be in next week and I will then drop the truck back off for the work. Anyone around the Shreveport, LA area, I now recommend Yokem Toyota for their service. I will give my golden seal of approval next week when the new parts are on.
Just got a call from my dealer...Price Leblanc Toyota in Baton Rouge, La......my parts are in.....they were ordered 11/01......will call them back on tomorrow to schedule an appt.
I took my truck over to Carson Toyota last week. I took the TSB with me. I told them that the brakes pulsate a bit and the steering wheel shakes when I hit the brakes going downhill while towing.
I call back midday and they decided to do the the TSB They ordered the parts and got the truck done in two days.
I have been driving the truck w/o towing to break-in the brakes. At first the pedal was a bit soft, but now it got much firmer and it has way more feel than before.
I have approx 300 miles on the new brakes and no pulsation yet. I will tow my race car to the track this weekend. The test will be going down the hill after climbing the grapevine. I am hoping that the TSB will take care of the steering shake while braking and towing.
