I dropped my Tun off at the dealer this morning for the brake TSB job after waiting for about 2.5 weeks for all the parts to come in. (I had less than 10k miles since the brakes started to vibrate). Later this afternoon, I am informed that the new parts (pads, shoes, shims, pins, rotors, drums, etc...) CANNOT be installed because the old brake assembly "backing plates" were too big and thus the new parts would not mount flush. Yes, the new brake parts are bigger than the ones to be replaced, but, the "backing plate" parts were not addressed in the TSB (as per the service rep), thus not ordered. I guess this is serious because to install these plates in the front, the spindels must be removed. Now I will have to wait for another 2.5 weeks for all four (one per assembly) "backing plates" to arrive.
So, for those of you who have yet to experience this, PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOUR SERVICE DEPT HAS THESE "BACKING PLATES" ORDERED WITH THE COMPLETE TSB REPLACEMENT PARTS, or you will have spent wasted time bringing your Tun to the dealer, only to find out that the parts will not be installed!
At least the good thing about all this, is that when everything is said and done (new parts & labor), I would have spent some wasted time but not a damn penny.
Ken,
Thanks. I called the dealer to ensure that they had the special tool and was reassured that they had it.
When I picked up my Tundra later today, I was told by my rep that there were 3 other Tundras and 1 Sequoia with the same TSB replacements, but they also could NOT be accommodated due to the missing backing plate replacements.
For those of you wondering, the backing plates are the black painted "plates" mounted directly behind the rotors and drums.
I wonder why this would not be addressed within the TSB? Would save customers alot of wasted time if that were one of the parts included within.
I had my brakes checked today and the mechanic showed me that the rotors are not straight..so it's gonna cost me $190 for a new pair of rotors with installation....i wish i was more attentive towards my warranty..now that it's over..i gotta pay for it
It is dealers like that, that make you wanna !#@$%#@! the bageezes outta them! Could you have taken it to another dealer in the neighborhood, like some other members have done?
I took my 2001 with ~13,000 miles in to the dealer last week. Over the last month I'd started to notice the brakes vibrate more and more especially when stopping while going down hill. When the brake light came on early last week, that was the last straw. I know I probably could have added a little brake fliud and been fine, but I wanted the dealer to check it out anyway. They suggested (and I agreed) that I have the front brake TSB done. They ordered the parts and we scheduled an appointment.
Took the truck in yesterday and when I got it back, they said that not only had they done the fronts, they found that the rear drums were out of round, so they replaced them too. I couldn't believe it!! I'd never taken the truck to the dealer before for brakes and on the first time I get all new components -- right now I'm loving' the dealer!
The only noticeable difference I see -- aside from everything looking new -- is the size of the calipers. I'd guess that they are at least 1/3 again as big as the original ones. Right now everything feels awesome...nice smooth stops, tight emergency brake, etc.
I was worried that I might end up with a worse situation than I started out with, but I feel no vibrations either while just cruising or while braking.
Looks like Toyota might have finally solved everyones' brake problems...
Not so sure about solving everyones problems. I wasnt really having that much trouble with the brakes but my dealer was more than wiling to do front and rear tsb. Brakes are perfect now but steering wheel is off center and I have a vibration in the front end now! Have an appt. next week to have it looked at. Seems like I have more trouble now than I had before!

Sorry to hear that you are having problems.
That's just the kind of situation that I was afraid of. I thought long and hard about whether or not I should even mess with the brakes, but I figured that in my case -- 1 1/2 year old truck at ~13,000 miles -- I've still got plenty of time before my warranty runs out. If it's not right, it'll still be under warranty and hopefully will eventually be fixed. So I rolled the dice... I thought it would be in my best interests to go ahead with the TSB, since I didn't figure the brakes were going to fix themselves. Things just get worse over time.
Hope you get your problems resolved...I know how frustrating that is!
Jus got the Tundra back today from having the TSB completed.......smoooooth as silk. Apparently the tech had some issues with it though......took a little longer than expected.....had the truck a day and a half.......when I got there to pick it up......on the ticket is said....."Right hub was damaged due to lock nut being staked on to hub....this ruined threads. R&R Right Hub". I am assuming this is the spindle they are referring to. Anyway.....they replaced it as well. Ill let you all know what happens a couple thousand miles down the road.
I had the latest TSB done on my 2000 2WD SR5. It took 7 weeks for the dealer to get the parts and 7 days without my truck for them to complete it...they broke their press mid-way through repairing my truck.
My question/comment is:
My pedal travel seems to be SO much further down. Is this a characteristic of the new calibers? I don't feel too comfortable with this.

Sounds like your brakes need to be bled...it's possible that the dealer 1) didn't do it at all after the TSB or 2) didn't get all of the air out of the line when they did it.

I second that. Had the same problem with the Sequoia. Bleed the brakes. Flush the system with at least a quart of NEW brake fluid. You may also want to adjust the rear shoes up to get a higher pedal. Your pedal feel should be the same. Nothing was done to the master cylinder.
Originally posted by PAUL FOX Took it back to the dealer and they say it's fine, which is what I expected. It just has that mushy pedal with what seems like more travel.
I'm just gonna bleed them myself and see what happens.
Thanks!!!
Tell'em every once in a while the pedal sets off the ABS and you think it needs bleeding.
