So i was looking at some pics where we went camping this and last year and found some thing pretty cool. first pic is from 07 and second pics is from same spot in 08. look at how much the water has gone down!! drove the tundra all the way down to the bottom, too bad i forgot the camera!

Beautiful, w/ or w/o the water. All it'll take is a nice extended shower or two to fill that lake back up.
and a good amount of snowfall. boy i have seen it when it was all the way full and did it look beautiful! it just sucks now when you go camping and you have to slowly walk through the steep rocks for a good 10 mins just to get to the water. i hope we get some good rainfall this year.

I lived in Redding many years ago and I've seen water flowing over the top via the spillway and I've seen that lake as dry as a bone. Mother Nature is a finicky...errrr....well, you know.

it's just amazing to see, like REALLY see how deep the lake is when it is that low. but i wouldn't mind living there. it's just so dead after 9pm on ANY given night, but there is so much to do if you are an outdoors person. my brother in law just showed me a nice spot to go do some light wheelin' when it rains.

It is a beautiful area up there, just too dam (get it? ) hot in the summer! We usually go camping up at Mt. Lassen every October after the crowds are gone and the temps start to cool off. I bet there is some good wheelin between Lassen and Shasta, I have never explored the area with that in mind before.

yeah, it does get very hot up there. but here in Sacramento, it gets almost as hot, so when it's 110 there and 105 here, you can't really tell the difference. where at in lassen do you camp? is it nice? lake/rivers nearby? i go to Shasta lake every year and would like to make change some changes and try different things. i've been to lassen, it's pretty nice, but never actually spent a lot of time there.

Agreed, it does get hot here too. The main difference between the Sacramento area and the Redding area is that at least we will get the delta breezes to cool us down. Redding stays hot through the whole summer. I recall coming out of a movie theatre at 1am and it was 98 degrees!!! The morning low as 92!!! The A/C runs 24/7 for months on end. I don't mind the heat so much as long as it cools down below 90 at night.
For Lassen, we've always stayed within the park itself. More specifically at Manzanita Lake camp ground (no motor boats allowed). Here's a link to the main Mt. Lassen web page. There are other smaller campgrounds within the park too and lots of hiking trails if you're into that. The hike to the summit of Mt. Lassen is not too bad. You start at around 8,000 feet (parking lot) and the summit is just over 10,000 feet. Relatively easy trail, just the altitude will get to you. Obviously, 4 wheelin' in a National Park is not a good idea, but I would suggest picking up a 4x4 trail book for that area and see what there is.
Another place I want to check out is Burney Falls. It's up the same road as Mt. Lassen, about another hour further out. I've also heard good things about Lake Almanor which is kind of sort of on the other side of Mt. Lassen.

hmm, got to go check it out one of these days. but no motor boats on the lake? wow, we always go camping with the boat. must be nice to camp with no motor boats though.
as for burney falls, i have been there and it was amazing my first time! it really was nice. been camping there, not too bad, you just have to tone your activities down by 10 pm. but the views of the falls are great and you can even take the boat out to the lake. very nice and peaceful.

I live in Redding. We have not had any significant rainfall since March. I have lived here since 94, and this is the dryest season yet. If we didn't have that lake or Whiskeytown lake (which I like more) we would be rationing water for sure.
If you ever get up this way, check out Whiskeytown Lake, west of town on 299. It's smaller than Shasta, but it's always full. They don't drain it like Shasta.....beautiful place....

I lived in Redding between about 1970 - 72. I still remember my mom taking us to Brandy Creek at Whiskeytown Lake to get out of the heat. I can still "feel" the sand on that beach burning my feet! You're right, it's a beautiful lake.
Thanks for the memories.

whiskeytown is nice. i read an article a few days ago saying that there was a waterfall that was "rediscovered". that picture of the fall looks nice, they said it's a good 2 miles hike to get to it. we go fishing at whiskeytown all the time for bluegills. we go to shasta for bass. whiskeytown seems to keep it's water all year long and brandy creek was a blast when i went for the first time. a nice bar-b-que by the creek before the beach is just so relaxing!

I spent a night or so sleeping on the grass at Whiskeytown Lake whille we had a wildland fire up in French Gulch. Place was pretty nice. The country up there was pretty steep and hard to walk upright.
One of these days I just need to rediscover these spots.
