I have picked out a new spot... I think it will have something for everyone. The main trail is about 40 miles long... and has a couple of spurs. The trail is between highway 4 and highway 88. Some of the landmarks of the trail would be the Calaveras Dome and Salt Springs Reservoir. There looks to be a lot of camping spots along the trail. There are a lot of creeks and such… so there may even be fishing possibilities. There are some bike trails and even look to be a few hiking trails.
The main trail is rated a 2. According to the books trail rating system… it’s basically passable by a passenger vehicle… but recommends high clearance for running the entire trail. Given the time of year… I’m not sure id want to do the trail in a passenger vehicle. What makes the trail nice is there are a few connecting trails that have ratings of 5 and 1 of the 5's even starts and finishes on this main trail... so those that wanted to could run off this way and those that didnt... could continue on the main trail This is not a very remote destination… but supposed to be quite scenic.
It looks like if we started off highway 4 (near Big Bear) we could spend a better part of the day on the trail and the first spur up to Calaveras dome. We would try to end up towards the end of the trail for camping Saturday night. From the camping spot… the trail is not much longer (10 miles or so)… but there is a spur to a picnic area and a reservoir where we could spend Sunday before heading out to 88.
Im thinking that this is a good first run of the year… and a good run for the first timers. I think I can even convince some friends with new vehicles to go on this one. The lower elevation should reduce the risks of being impassable because of snow.
I will work on some maps and such… im entering the GPS info into my mapping program… I should be able to print maps of the area. If you have the Backcountry Adventures book (norcal) this would be Northern Sierra #8-11. the main trail im talking about is #9.

In May.... and I thought it was this month you were planning a trail run.
Between hwy 4 and 88, you know Deer Valley runs between these two hwys also. On another note, at what elevation were the areas you are talking about. If we have some late snow fall, the trails may still be covered and we'll have another Barney Riley re-occurence.
well if you want to do something this month... let me know!
yea yea yea dear valley....this trail is quite the oppososite. you could probably make it 3 wheel drive
from the elevation... its about 3-7K. maybe we should invite someone with a winch. why dont you ask ponsie if you can get a winch... ive kind of blew my wad already.
no abs fix yet... a couple guys kind of trashed my thread with talk of how i should rip out the ABS and do a SAS...and noone else answerd. LOL! i was going to call up powertrax people and see if they could offer up a solution.

Yeah right, with the baby coming, I don't think I can spend a load on a winch right now. I have to swap my rear springs for the chevys but, need to replace the bushings on the chevy leafs. I also, need to adjust my driver side camber, and fix my airbag/horn wire in the the steering wheel.
Dan and his heep has a winch. I'm sure if I give him a few weeks notice, he'd be down to go. Those guys who trashed your thread are a bunch of punks
Sounds good! It looks like the 27th-28th is Memorial Day weekend, so we would probably want to avoid those dates...
By the way, did you ask a moderator to make this thread a "sticky"? The old NorCal 4x4 thread could be released.

May 20-21? If the trail looks like it'll be wide enough for a DC 4x4 Tundra, then I'm in. So far, I've only had the chance to run in 4x4 in some snow, and a little ice.
I am thinking about going to the Safety Clinic hosted by the Capital City Mountain Goat club in April to pick up a few pointers on manuvering the silver beast around off road.
Arcadi6730 - excellent idea! There's nothing like practicing in a safe and controlled environment to get the "feel" of your truck.

Yeah, I figure that I should learn something about 4 wheeling before I take the new tundra off road. I did take my previous tundra off road back in the days, but it just isn't much fun when you have to get towed everywhere. (I had a 4x2)
Anyway, it'll be interesting to see how this may thing works out. It's only early Feb, and I'm already looking forward to it.
yes.. may has turned out in the past to be an early start for the sierras... im hoping with the weak snow fall this year that we dont get a late hit! as much as i love the snow... im hoping for an early end to the season.
anyone familiar with the Bear ski area?? im wondering what the snow fall is like that way. i usually ride north tahoe.
im working on the topo maps... its pretty awesome. from the gps coordinates in the book, i can enter them onto the map. most of the trails i have played with were actually on the topo maps already. the gps plot from the book is acting as a directional marker.... but the actual trail is right there. i played with the 3d topo in the truck lewaving my cabin a few weeks back.... it was really kewl. they even let me select the position pointer as a truck. i laughed me a$$ off about that.
