Camry HybridGeneral discussion forum for the Toyota Camry Hybrid.
This is a discussion thread titled "Beware Camry Hybrid Trunk!", within the Camry Hybrid forum, part of the Cars & Vans Forums category.
Just a warning to beware the trunk of the Camry Hybrid. I knew 10.6 cu ft was small, but goodness, having just seen it, it's SMALL. I'm still most likely buying one, but if I had kids, I don't think I could do it. I noticed how difficult it was finding good photos of the trunk; I wonder if Toyota asked people not to take photos of it?
Anyway, I'm just warning those of you on waiting lists to go by and see for yourself. I plan to get some pictures the next time I see one. This time, I didn't have time to go home to get my camera.
THIS IS MY FIRST POST. I took delivery with the requested xm radio installed and found a rather mickey-mouse Toyota approved antennae installed. It is on the rear shelf and is comprised of a round magnetic disk on which a small object sits with a wire attached. This is the antennae. The reception is intermitant in my area, if my little contraption cannot see the satellite,it cannot receive. It should be the other way around, the satellite should see the antennae and with the present set up this cannot always happen. I traded in a 06 acura TL with the XM radio and with the Honda installation, it was almost flawless. Has anyone else any experience with the Toyota Camry XM? Is there an external mini antennae that would rear window install?
This is the only real disappointment with the Hybrid, altho the Navi system leaves quite a bit to be desired. I have 4,000 miles on the car and have averaged just over 42 mpg so far. Am leaving on another 3500-4000 mile trip on the 15th and hope to increase the average.
I just bought a Camry Hybrid about 3 weeks ago, when I inquired about installing XM to the radio package it was about $400+, forget that. I installed my own XM receiver and placed the antenna on the trunk lid, up on the front lip. Wiring to the front of the car was not much of a problem, just stuck it under the plastic trim. I find that the receiption is about the same as it was on the truck, although since it is not on the top of the car, the cabin roof infront of the antenna does knock out some the the signal. Putting the antenna on the back deck in the car is a bad idea. You have the window heater wires and FM antenna wires directly over the antenna and also all the metal of the roof almost directly above. Because of the high frequency of the satelite radio, it is really line of sight, thus mountains, buildings, car roofs, and thick trees will degrade the signal.
Yes the trunk is small, my problem is will my snowboard fit through the one seat that will fold down. I'm in deep dodo if it doesn't fit.
Had our Camry a few weeks now and have done just 1 real weekend trip and the trunk space is a limitation if you're used to probably any other standard sedan. We accepted it as being small since we don't have kids but even if you need to store luggage for more than a couple people, it likely will be tough.
Just make sure you check it out and agree to live with it before you buy
The pass thru is also pretty small, and only available on half of the rear seat. The other half is blocked by the batteries and controller and vent. Some have complained that they can’t get 4 sets of golf clubs in there.

"I GOT A HYBRID AND I AM NOT AFFRAID TO USE IT"
The trunk size is my biggest peeve with the hybrid. I used to drive an 02 Camry with the normal trunk, and that sucker was big! I fit anything and everything I ever wanted to fit in there. I loved that trunk! This one is pathetic by comparison. I went camping with my mom and my daughter, and I had to arrange and rearrange our gear very carefully to get it all in, and then we couldn't buy anything when we got there unless we ditched something else. Kinda defeats the purpose of being a "green" car if you can't use it for green activities like camping. If we'd tried to squeeze in one more person, we couldn't have done it at all.
question: Why do yu consider your Hybrid "Green"???
It's a misnomer when it comes to hybrids. It's is only Politically "correct".
No current hybrids are TRUE "Green". If yu got the Hybrid for fuel economy I commend yu!
But please don't tell me hybrids are "Green", like camping activities are! I heard this word, Green, once too many times. Maybe it helps people justify the additional expense of a Hybrid vehicle???
That is car Industry Hype. Greenpeace propganda possibly.
There have been and are presently being conducted End of Life studies. And thus far, Hybrids are on the contrary not Green by comparison to an equivalent Non.hybrid Camry for instance.
Read up on EOL studies and the environment. Hint: "Nickle Metal hydride" and manufacturing and recycling of same.
Please, nothing personal intended here!

I have the same problem. I live in Washington State and I'm thinking due to my northern location, I get major signal losses on my XM radio kit that I got with my Camry Hybrid. I just spoke with the dealership and they said that they can't move the antenna since it's "where it's supposed to be". Furthermore, they don't have anyone trained to move the antenna location to the exterior of the vehicle.
I called the Toyota Customer Service and they mentioned that a lot of people complained about the antenna's being on the exterior of the vehicle, so for new models that have a satellite radio kit, they moved the antenna location inside. Plus they said that the length of the antenna is only long enough to reach the rear shelf/deck and that it wouldn't reach the trunk lid anyways. Basically I am SOL with trying to get Toyota to move the antenna to the exterior of the vehicle, which every XM person will tell you that's where it should go!!!

LifeTech.

OK, I'll bite.
How do you figure this?? Emissions are 80% lower for the life of the vehicle, fuel consumption is reduced by about 40% and the battery's are recycled. That sounds a lot greener than say a Ford or Chevy PU or an SUV.

Your percentages are far reaching. Be honest with yourself before yu think about creating numbers out of your***** on this thread.
Also, yu must think that the word recycle is some magical way of making things disappear. Toxic substances don't go away easily. Like the several hundred D cells that make up the battery packs. (NMH)
Lets compare a Camry 4cyl to a Camry Hybrid. Now,talk numbers to me and be REALISTIC. dollar for dollar....MPG advantage...
Sure, no problem. I have one of each so I am speaking in real life numbers, are you???
My wife's XLE averages 26 mpg's and I'm averaging 41 mpg. I paid $3000 more for the hybrid and Uncle Sam is giving me $2600 of that back. I also expect the re-sale value to be much higher for my hybrid over hers. Don't trust my numbers do the math yourself.
I am a physicist and work for the government. Our own environmental office deals with such waste on a daily bases. Don't forget to include the emissions to process the crude oil to gas. While your at it, include the emissions to transport the gas to the service stations. They tell me the emissions emitted over the life of the non-hybrid exceeded the issue with the batteries many times over. There are companies out there that make a good living recycling batteries to include Toyota who has a contract with such companies. They will pay for the old battery packs.
Sounds like someone just wants to complain without any real evidence!!
