2007 Camry tail light covers

I saw a set of smoked colored tail light covers on an '07 Camry today. I imagine they have to be illegal on the highway because they really diminish the light output of the brake lights.

Hey Lon,
I have often wondered about aftermarket tail lights.
The more chrome than red light type.
I thought auto makers had to engieer a certain size and output into their cars.To meet DOT standards on all exterior lighting.
The worst is a Caddie suv with LEDs that scramble your eyeballs in really dark areas.

I imagine some of the aftermarket replacement lights are illegal in some states. Our resident highway patrolmen should ring in on this. I know lens covers either smoked, colored or clear are illegal on the highway.
