Until now the navigational system has not been available for the TCH in Canada. I have had my TCH 2 months now. I have just had the factory Navigation system installed by Nanaimo Toyota. For any one wanting to attempt this themselves, this is not an easy install, even for the dealer. There are sensors, many connections and of course programming. The service manager and technician spent a considerable amount of time on this vehicle. So much so that myself and my wife got an unexpected holiday in Nanaimo being that this dealer is a ferry boat ride away from where I live. I was given a Highlander to drive as I was there overnight.
For all the people that have had a bad experience at a dealership, the people at Nanaimo Toyota can turn a sometimes unpleasant experience into a holiday. They worked diligently to get the job done to perfection and treated us with the utmost respect. At one point the Salesman, Manager, Service Manager and Technician were all involved in helping us. For anyone in BC thinking of getting the factory Nav. system installed, or buying a Toyota, especially the TCH as they have one on their lot now: NANAIMO TOYOTA is the place to go, especially if you miss what real service used to be like.
Nanaimo is also a beautiful city to visit.
The Toyota Nav. maps are not as good as my Magellan for Canada, but the maps can be updated, as I have version 5.1, and there is a new version coming out. The features on this unit are far superior to anything that I have seen before. The manual for this was downloaded by the service manager and printed out for me, and fills a 2" binder.
Your input is of interest. I was unaware that dealers were able to install the navi in the TCH. My car(US version) came with it installed as it was built in Japan. The Canadian mapping is standard in the US car, not so in the Honda system. We drove to Fairmont Hot Springs, Revelstoke and back to Victoria without a glitch. You have already found that the Toyota system is not the industry leader, Honda is. There is a substantial price differential however. Did the Nanimo dealer give you any idea when the new database would be available? I have discovered quite a few missing U.S. highway components and am anxious to get a new disk.

In Canada Navi as far as I know is only available as a dealer installed option. Check out the link below and pick an option package and colour to see options:- http://www.toyota.ca/cgi-bin/WebObje...,lpalert=false
Programming? I installed my NAV in my TCH before it was a dealer option myself. No programming was needed for the unit to work. Was the programming to get the energy screen to work?

Hi. I am unsure what the programming was for. As for the Energy screen the dealer will be hooking up the 4 wires needed for the Energy screen to work. They are also looking into installing a camera but first they will install the park assist. The camera will not be much good without the reverse sensors in my opinion.
When I bought my TCH in the Atl GA area it didn't come with the NAV system and I was told that it could not be installed in the dash, it would have to come from the factory that way. They said they could install a unit that would sit on the dash and I said no thanks.
Are you guys saying that the dealer can put an in-dash nav system in at the dealership?

Hi Steve:
Yes! From what I've been told the vehicle arrives at the dealers with the standard radio installed, the service department then exchanges the standard radio for the radio/navigation unit and returns the original radio to Toyota. The end result is the same as a factory installed radio/navigation system. I have a vehicle on order with the navigation option but haven't received it yet. If you are interested you can go to the Canadian website:-
You have to price a vehicle to get to the options list! You may have to enter the link if clicking on it does not work.
You'll see that navigation is shown as a dealer install option.
I don't see why you couldn't order the navigation system and a later date although I'm not sure whether they would give you a credit for the original radio. Hope this helps.
Paul

Can you tell me how much you paid for the NAV? Are there extra charges for the installation? Why did you go to Nanaimo? Why not a local dealership?

The Cost for the Navigation unit was the same as on Toyota.ca. I still have the unit that was taken out. I gave a couple of dealers in Vancouver a chance and they failed miserably. It is a very long story. To cut it short I did order a TCH at a local Dealer. 3.5 Months later no car. So I went on Edunds.com and found the same car in Nanaimo. The information was given to me by someone that tried to get a TCH in Victoria and was not treated well. So he also bought his TCH in Nanaimo. Which they had for him in a few weeks. I phoned Nanaimo the day I found out they had the one I was looking for and put a deposit down. The salesman picked me up at the Ferry the next day. I also went to a Toyoa dealer close to my house to get the drivers seat leather changed on warranty. When I picked up the car I noticed the drivers metal door sill protector had a dent and scratch. This made me mad not that they did it, but that they did not say anything. I called the service manager out and they replaced it. So now I go to Nanaimo Toyota even for an oil change. This Dealership has a lot of great people working there and they are honest, which you might say is a contradiction but it's true. I just had them install park assist and an oil change.

I know what you mean, I first went to Downtown Toyota and wasn't treated well. They seem to not want to sell me a car. Anyway, I reluctantly tried Regency and was treated awesome. Faheem, the sales manager, is an awesome guy to deal with, and he was able to get me my TCH in just under 3 weeks! I've had my TCH for just over a month and love it! Which local dealerships did you go to?
You go to Nanaimo even for an oil change? How much do they charge? Do they have both 0W20 and 5W20 (in synthetic and regular)? How many hybrid technicians does Nanaimo have?
Obviously you got the door sill protector, and park assist, any other accessories? And the Nav - I want one but don't want to pay $3000. How are they working out for you? How much did they cost you? Is the park assist colour matched? Does the NAV display all the FE graphs and etc. Did you get a cargo mat with your purchase? I didn't but bought a Weathertech cargo liner (very nice). Currently, I'm thinking of getting the window visors.
Last question, did you get the ECP (which plan)? If so, how much did you pay for it?

Does your navigation screen show the hybrid energy monitoring information screens as shown on pages 3 - 5 of the Owners Manual? If you have it, it is accessible by pressing the Info button followed by the Trip information icon.
Mine doesn't but I am still having discussions with Toyota on the subject!
Can you confirm whether Nanaimo Toyota ever connected the extra wires to get the extra Hybrid screens on your NAV. I'm considering a TCH, B Package with NAV, but don't think the NAV would be worth it if it does not have the extra Hybrid screens. I've read several posts that suggest that these extra screens are not available on Canadian NAV's. Most of these are several months old, so I was hoping a fix to the problem has been found.
I get free oil changes because I purchased the extended warranty. Although I choose to Bring my own Mobile 1 0-20. I have used Mobile 1 synthetic in all my vehicles since before it was available in Canada. I used to cross the border to get Mobile 1. for my 1971 t bird. On some of my vehicles I put over 300,000 miles and not one problem with the engine. Upgrades I have done to my THC. GPS,jasper pearl side molding that had to be painted as they don't come in that colour, weathertech trunk liner and window visors,Toyota rubber mats, backup sensors,3m film covering front bumper half the hood, mirrors, roof in front of sunroof, behind door handles and top of back bumper, and I tried a wireless backup camera, but I got too much interference Probably from Bluetooth. I also Bought Nav. 6.1 and after burning 5 DL disks,I had a Hybrid disk that works great. This was made on a Mac which is quite simple if you use the right program. If anyone wants the steps leave your Email. As for the display on the Gps that shows mileage info or as I call it here Kilometrage. I am don't think it would make a lot of difference if I had it as I keep my GPS screen off unless I need the map. But I must say I love the GPS. I must have used a lot of gas before just trying to find an address.
