Angry Center console squeak!!

Does anyone else have a problem with the center console (around the shifter) squeeking? I have taken it to two Toyota dealers a total of 4 times and they still can't get it to stop. I assume they used foam damping material. I feel like I'm driving a Ford. I have 27000 miles, but it started at about 2000. Any suggestions?

Also, trying to be number 1 has hurt Toyotas overall panel fit on the interier, especially on the speaker covers and dash. This car was supposed to be made at the top Japanese plant, but I think my 2006 Tacoma was built much better.

My wife's hybrid has had the same problem since about 1000 miles. I happen to work for our dealership as a mechanic but for a different manufacturer. I dropped my wifes Camry off to have a new key programmed and told the service advisor about the problem and were the noise was coming from. I also specificly showed him how to quiet it and told him I thought it needed foam tape to isolate the trim panels from one another. I picked up her car and it was quiet for a day. The advisor had told me that the tech had applied foam tape. Last weekend I was installing my wife's XM radio so I had to remove all the center console trim. Guess what?? No foam tape or any evidence the tech had attempted to stop the squeak. Now I am not surprised it still squeaks. When I get an opportunity I am gonna put some foam tape in between the panels. Just so you know the trim around the shift knob pops out. I am fairly sure the noise is coming from were that peice is touching the surrounding plastic trim. All those plastic trim peices basicly pop out. Just take care. Best advise is to explain it to a trustworthy dealer and let them know were the noise is. As a technician for a high line manufacturer I was a little disappointed but things happen and we all have bad days.

Yes, we have the same problem. If you move the shifter left to right (jiggle it) while your moving, the squeak is louder.

Thanks,
I will be taking mine back in for a 4th time this week. They have a foam kit that along with the foam tape should fix the problem. I don't think they even check it out after they do what they do. I drive alot and this high squeak is driving me up the wall!

I finally had them replace my center console below the shifter and it fixed the problem.

the problem is between the shifter trim upper plate and the plastic pieces bonded to the bottom of the plate. This is ONE assembly and will require replacement, foam tape will not work. Modification may be the answer until a corrected part is available.

I fixed the problem in mine last year, and the solution lasts.

Around the shifter there is a clear plastic part that surrounds the shifter. That part comes with the main color-coordinated console cover when you pry it up. That clear plastic is aluminized in some areas. It is its bottom face that squeaks against the fixed part of the console. Stick a layer of electrical tape along the shifter opening, taking care not to obscure the area used for lighting the shifter position lettering.

That's it. You won't hear it again, from -20° to +80°.

Good luck.
