Camry HybridGeneral discussion forum for the Toyota Camry Hybrid.
This is a discussion thread titled "Oil change, dealer used 10W30?", within the Camry Hybrid forum, part of the Cars & Vans Forums category.
Got first oil change today, and told service tech about the recommeded oil, 5W30 or 0W30, but when I got home I looked at the invoice and it said they used bulk 10W30 oil. Will this do any harm and why don't they use the recommended oils?
I don't personnally feel this would do any major harm to your engine but Toyota does recommend that viscosity for a reason. I would call the dealership and have them redo the service with the correct oil. I am assuming the lower weight oil is recommended for one due to emmsions and also because our engines mostly don't really ever get fully warmed and are constantly starting and stopping. I would personnally feel more comfy with the correct viscosity. As a technician myself, I feel the dealership should be more than happy to correct their mistake.
Don't you mean 0w20 or 5w20? My dealer in Orleans, Canada used 0w20 synthetic for my first free oil change (four free changes with the extended wararanty) and showed me a Toyota bulletin saying that they should use the 0w20 oil for any car that came with 0w20 from the assembly line and offered the dealer extra payment for the more expensive oil. The dealer is in Orleans Canada just a few kilometers east of Ottawa. No other dealer nearby would admit that 0w20 was available and suggested 5w30. This means I drive a bit further to a dealer that seems to know what Toyota recommends and will go to the trouble of using the right oil. Tony Graham Toyota In Ottawa told me that Toyota does not recommend 0w20 or 5w20. I popped the hood latch and asked that they read the dip stick label. He then said we don't have 0w20 or 5w20 oil available. Needless to say, I will not go back there.
they only use one oil for all of the vehicles because it is
in bulk and no one "makes" them use the correct weight.
it would cost them money to carry all of the needed weights
in bulk and they won't use it in bottles because it takes time.
you would at least think that it would be high on the list of
things to do correctly when doing an oil change. maybe i
shouldn't think so much. yspert
Thanks for the replys. Yes, I meant 0W20 or 5W20 not 30. I have e-mailed the dealer for an explanation as to why they apparently used 10W30 oil when Toyota recommends the other grades. One would think that the dealers would follow the recommendations of Toyota to prevent problems from occuring both with the vehicle and with the customer, who keeps them in business.
You get better mileage with the correct thinner oil, and its better for the motor in cold climates, even the 4.7 uses 5w30 make them do it again, call Toyota direct, and ask them what that would do to your warranty if you blew a motor, and all your maintenance statements listed the wrong oil.

I wouldn't sweat the 10w part. In New Orleans it never gets cold enough to make a difference. I can also understand why 0w is the standard in Canada where winters are brutal.
Due to excessive dealer cost I just had Pepboys do our 30k service (last night). When I looked at the recipt they used 5w30 and said that is what their computer defaults to for the 07 Camry. They did say they would swap it out for no charge if I demanded so I have that going for me. Now with that said I saw on anther forum that someone said their dealer changed theirs with 5w30 and when questioned said that Toyota says 5w30 is ok.
Is that the case? Or should I have Pepboys change the oil?
May or may not be the same with Toyota but Honda sends some of their cars for Govt fuel economy testing with light oil because it improves mpg ratings slightly. The Govt requires that they specify the same oil in their owners manuals and under the hood. Last I heard Honda was saying it's OK to run a heavier oil for one change if you put it in by mistake but you should go back to lighter oil at the next change.
