Default Diagnostic plug is dead... Need some help Mustang!!

The check engine light came on my 99 Solara (although the car seems to be running just fine). I plugged in my diagnostic code reader just like I always do and all it gives me is a reading error message. Drove it down to AutoZone and they could not get it to read out a code either. I reset the engine light by disconnecting then reconnecting battery cable and retried the code reader.. it still gave me the same reading error message. I then tried the reader on my Sequoia and it worked just fine.

Anyone have any thoughts why the diagnostic plug on the Solara might not be working??
