Nope. The only way you can do it is through the dealership. They have to order one & program it for you based off your key number.
PXL, I have a 2K Solara with about 100k miles on it. My question is what is the probability of the timing belt going belly up in the near future? This is my my 6th Toyota (pickup,4 runner, mini van, Tercel 4X4, and 2 Camrys). The Runner has 225K and still has orig timing belt. All the other vehicles had about or over 100k on them and had orig timing belts. Am I flirting with disaster? BTW I always use either Slick 50 or BG products in all engines, if that is a factor. Another ?. Isn't this engine the type (non-interference) that, if a timing belt goes, the the pistons and valves won't physically hit each other? Thanx. Just found info that says the 3.0 V6 Solara engine is an interference type engine. Which is it. Thanx again.
Unfortunately I don't know that much about the Gen 1 engines, but if I see something I will report back.
I do know that most folks rather pay the cost for a new timing belt at 100K +/- than what it costs after it breaks. I personally wouldn't let it go much beyond 120K - but that's just me.
Thanks for volunteering to answer our questions. I am a newbie to this forum and I just bought a used '04 Solara V6 SE this weekend. I bought it from Carmax and I am within the five day period where I can return the car if not satisfied.
I drove around 200 miles during the last two days and I noticed a left pull/drift while going straight on highways. Initially I thought it might be an alignment problem and was thinking about taking it back to Carmax service.
Later on after some research, I found that there was a Toyota Service Bulletin for this problem for 04/05 Camrys and Solaras, and I did find find my VIN # falling in the range of VINs mentioned in the TSB.
My dilemma at this point is whether I should keep the car and get it serviced according to the TSB or just go ahead and return it because of this problem.
I just love the car otherwise, it drives like a dream. I am really confused at this moment.
Still trying to find out for sure if my 2000 Solara (3.0 V6) has a non-interference engine. Gates says interference and another site says non-interference. Can someone verify? Thanx.
From the mouths of old school mechanics concerning interference engines is that all motors are interference if the motor is spinning fast enough valves can hit the pistons but some motors are fine if the belt breaks at idle or a low speed. I have seen many 3 liters with broken t-belts and I have never seen any internal damage. So either all the 3 liters I have seen were going slow or it is truly not an interference engine. But IMO I would not go past 100K wiht out changing it even if it is not an interference engine. Most of the 3 liters start slapping the cover before they break and if it is slapping the cover I would change it soon.
Now for my Solara question - I am considering buying a Solara for a 3rd car for a little better gas mileage and more fun than my Tacoma and my wife's Sequoia and my wife wants a convertible and I am too tall for most import convertibles. I am looking for a V6 with a 5 spd. Was the convertible available with the 5spd and V6? What was the first year that combo was made? What kind of gas mileage does the 5spd / V6 get? Has there been a lot of complaints about the tops on these cars leaking or mechanical problems? I am a mechanic so I know about the motor, suspension, and brakes on the Camrys but I don't even know if the top is manual or power. Also one last questions has there been any problems with the manual trannies that come with the V6. I have been a mechanic for almost 10 yrs but I don't see Solaras at my work at all.

Thanks and sorry for all the questions.
Hi dcab, the V6 is not available as a manual in the convertible. I think it might be on the sport coupe, but definitely no the convertible for 06 or 07, and I don't think it was for any other yeat either. PXL may know more.
I have not had a single problem with my top since the purchase on my 06 in April of 2005. The only gripe I have is that the top will drip on you when you open the door or roll the window down during rain. Top is holding up well, and I live in Florida. The top is power...you usually only get manual tops in the little roadster convertibles.
Can't help you with your manual transmission question, perhaps someone else will know.
How about a 4cyl/ 5spd combination? Was that available in any year Convertible. I am not set on any generation. My questions are really more geared towards the 1st gen Conv. because I doubt I will find a 2nd gen for cheap enough.

I don't think the Solara convertible ever came with a 4cyl option. As far as I know, they have always been V6s.
