Default 1995 Camry V6 2-door- check engine light

Hello,
Car has 118K miles. My check engine light came on 2 months ago, a local shop (not dealer) diagnosed it as needing a new transmission; they quoted $1800 for re-built trans. The light turned off on its own for about 2 months and just came on again. I will bring to Toyota dealer for diagnosis/2nd opinion. Car is serviced regularly, oil changes, etc; runs great! Does anyone know if a transmission is supposed to go at around 118K miles?

Also, if dealer also diagnoses as transmission, should I repair with dealer or local shop. I'm sure dealer will charge a lot more. Is this how much rebuilt transmissions usually costs?

I'd appreciate any input. Thanks very much!

If the light is on a fault code should be stored in the computer. What is that code? Additionally, engine malfunctions are often misdiagnosed as transmission problems. It would be unusual for the trans to fail at 118K unless it was abused and/or never serviced.
