Default New transmission needed for Camry - help!

Hello,

I have a 95 Camry V6, 2 door. Check engine light was diagnosed by two different shops as solenoid transmission problem and that I'd need basically a rebulit transmission. A local shop quotd $1800 and dealer $3500. Both offered 1 year warrant. Does this make sense at 119K miles? That is a very big cost difference I'm not sure what to do; I'd appreciate any comments or suggestions. Should I shop around at more repair shops for a better price? Has anyone had good experience with AAMCO ($2,000 to $2500)? Thanks!!

If it were my car, I would not spend that much money at the toyota dealer. The reason is your car already got 119k, and it makes more sense to have it fixed at whoever charges cheaper. I think that whereever you have your car fixed, it is still covered 1 year warantee. Make sure you contact and negotiate at different shops for that.

Also, if your car got an issue with the transmission, I don't think it still can run. As you said that the light on for a while and off, and then on again, it could be something with the sensor only. My 1992 toyota got exactly the same problem like yours, but it it still running for years without any issue with the transmission. This is how I think. Could be wrong. Who knows.

Thank you for your post, it makes sense. THe light turned off again. I will probably just drive it until there is more obvious signs that there's major problem swith the transmission.
