Default 98 Camry Check Engine Light
I have a 1998 Camry, 4-cyl, with 150K miles. 4 or 5 days ago, the check engine light came on before a 2.5 hr drive, and the car drove just the whole way. I took it to the mechanic, and he said that I probably just left the gas cap off, and it was drivable.

The light came on again this morning, and there are no strange noises and the car seems fine. I am planning on taking a 300 mile road trip this evening though... Any opinions on how safe it is to drive that far?

What I would do is take it to Autozone and have them check it with their code reader - they can tell you what is causing the light to come on. I say autozone because they'll do it for free.

It's hard to say how "safe" it is without actually seeing the car. It could be something really minor - I have 145K on my '97 Camry and the check engine light came on - I just had a bad gas cap....replaced that and it hasn't come on since.
