CamryGeneral discussion forum for the Toyota Camry.
This is a discussion thread titled "Camry Smart Key", within the Camry forum, part of the Cars & Vans Forums category.
I am about to purchase a 2007 Camry off the dealers lot. One has the Smart Key and one doesn't. It seems like a convenient option. I would like to hear from people who have the Smart Key regarding pros & cons. Thanks
Pros
Nice feature but not a real big deal.
Cons
Washing the car or just walking by it will have it beeping and locking and unlocking if you have the remote in your pocket.
If you have other vehicles without Smart Key,you'll be going in your pockets for a key by habit.

Joe, this is not the case. Walking past and washing do not
initiate any beeping or unintentail lock/unlock.
Actually,I'm not sure about the locking and unlocking but it will chime when walking close to the driver's door.
I'm told there are at least 6 antenna's for reception of the remote which causes it.

The Camry system may be different but the system in my '06 Avalon doesn't do anything when you just walk near the car, locked or unlocked. You have to grab one of the door handles with the smart key in your pocket to get the doors to unlock or press one of the black buttons to lock the doors.
There aren't really any cons that I can think of. It will cost more to replace than a "normal" key, just don't lose it and you don't have to worry about that though.

I agree. Its a luxury but a nice convenience. Thanks for the input!
Choice is VERY easy. Go with the Smart Key. There is no chirping when you walk past the car, I don't know where that guy is getting his info, but he does not know what he is talking about.

Go for it
Smart ***,I have Smart Key and have the issue.
The next time I go in for service,I'll have it looked into.

I'd love to, no more keys!! But at $38,000 plus for a Limited 08 Highlander it's pretty pricey. My Avalon stickered for $35,000 and I got it for $31,000. It will be a while before they are dealing on Highlanders and still the price is going to be above $35,000. We will probably look at the Rav4 as a replacement for her 03 Highlander, about the same size and gets much better mileage than the new Highlander with the same V-6 engine.
I have experienced what joeb427 is talking about. The problem seems to be that the buttons on the smartkey fob are not recessed. When bending over to wash the car with the fob in your pocket, there is a tendency for the buttons to become inadvertently depressed, resulting in unexpected locking/unlocking, as well as changing of the driver's seat position (I have the memory seat feature). Same issue when checking the tire pressure. A lot depends on how confined your pocket is. I now hang the fob on a hook well away from the car while washing it.
One thing I found while washing the car is you need to unlock the doors then open one, close it and then wash (and don't press one of the locking black buttons). If the doors are locked, when you wash the handles the doors will unlock. If you don't actually open a door they re-lock in 20-30 seconds. When you get to the next door handle to wash it the same thing happens over and over. So you need to either have the doors locked and the smart key away from the car or you need to do what I suggested above.
