CamryGeneral discussion forum for the Toyota Camry.
This is a discussion thread titled "07 I4 XLE rusting bolts", within the Camry forum, part of the Cars & Vans Forums category.
Hello Family,
i am a proud owner of an 07 XLE for about a year now and i was just peaking around under the hood and saw a couple intriguing stuff, some bolts are rusting, i mean not minor rust but very noticeable rusting and those bolts i believe are the one holding the motor to the carriage. i will be taking it in for review and politely request those be replaced with at least some galvanized bolts. i live in Iowa no where close to seashore so kinda intrigues me.
Any comments or suggestions on what to or how to go about it are welcomed.
Thanks

Good God. Bolts are steel, steel rusts. Get over it!

True, but I can understand where he is coming from.... a one year old car should not have any rust. I know you live in the north however... did you drive it alot in the salt (snowy roads) up there last winter? Does not snow much at all here -so not much rust concerns here, but even for up north, the rust he is describing I would consider unacceptable on a new car. My Toyota is a 2000 and there is no rust on anything, but it is a southern vehicle.

I understand the author of this thread and his concern.....
However,
1: the rust will not impact the functional use of that bolt/nut.
(I agree and, although cost prohibitive for any mnanufacturer, I wish all hardware on a vehicle was not even galvanized but stainless steel!)
This is just not done! In fact most (not all) automotive hardware is Zinc dipped, not galvanized.
2: the dealer's service writer although possibly polite with his response over your concerns , will just have another laugh over dinner when his spouse asks "how was your day?
Honestly, This is not any great issue. It would be crazy to say that for aesthetic reasons the hardware should be replaced.
The hardware IS fine!

To Njerald,
I know bolts are steel and steel rusts, but my point is within a year of buying a new car, if you see rusting on any part of it, it will raise some kind of flag and common sense would make you try to find out if anyone else has seen or is experiencing the same situation and I believe that’s the basic fundamental of this forum, so PLEASE if you don’t have anything nice to say about a post, please keep you remarks for yourself. I had a great esteem for you man, you have provided some great info to this forum e.g. TSB EG036-07 which I will have it done on my car soon…. Back to the point, please be nice. Thanks
To all the other nice replies,
I have had the car since November and here in Iowa we only had a few snow storms and a couple of icy roads so yeah it was driven thru salty roads, i don’t know if it makes a difference but the bolts that are under the carriage is not a major concern because I know that will definitely show some wear on it, but it’s the ones that are right under the hood, very far from the opening on the bottom, so yeah a bit concerning I should say.
I will call the Customer Service number and see if anything can be done, I did get the extended warranty from TFS, I don’t know if that makes a difference but we shall see.
When I take it in for my 10,000 miles service or when I get the above mentioned TSB done I will see if the dealer knows anything about it
Thanks for reading and providing meaningful feedbacks.

It does seem unusual to have rust in that area. Our Japanese assembled 2003 Camry hasn't any rust at all under the hood/engine compartment and very little anywhere on the bottom of the car. Minnesota drops salt and sand at the first hint of slick roads so it has had some pretty heavy exposure.
On the 2000 Tundra I had rust showed up very quickly on the frame rails but the under hood area stayed clean.

If a combo of all these whizz bangs met their claims you'd have to syphon gas out of your tank every second day and sell the excess horsepower on the third????
