CamryGeneral discussion forum for the Toyota Camry.
This is a discussion thread titled "Premature Brake Wear??? (2007 Camry LV V6)", within the Camry forum, part of the Cars & Vans Forums category.
As per the title of this thread and as per my profile, I have a 2007 Camry LE V6...is an early model version (made in April 2006 and purchased in May 2006). I have just turned a tad over 30K miles and I had the car into the dealer for it's first "major" routine service .
Everything was fine and normal...except (IMHO) the rear brake pads and rotors. It seems that I had approx. 1mm of pad left and the rotors were slightly glazed.
I had them do a rear pad replacement and ensure the rotors are clean and true...no other issues to report here.
The front pads BTW have approx. 8mm remaining.
My question to this august body (especially any Toyota technicians out there)...doesn't this seem like uneven wear? Doesn't this seem a tad premature for rear pads?
In looking at the records from my previous service calls, it does seem like the pads have been wearing steadily but I guess I just thought that the front pads were MUCH thicker than the rear pads...
Yes, I have the old parts and the pads don't have any nicks or damage to them, it just looks like normal pads that are on the "thin" side.
One last comment...it's now been a year since I received the replacement transmission and it's fine...no problems. Any of you out there that are wondering if you should take your car in...DO IT!
OK, thoughts? Comments?
Thanks
SW

there is a TSB for 07 and up Camry's for "Premature Brake Wear" for the rear pads and the fix IS updated pads. kinda weird when the rear pads wear out faster then the fronts, especially at only a 30K.

I spoke to my Service Writer (Dean) at Frontier Toyota and we reviewed the conditions where this TSB would apply. He informed me that he did consider the TSB but his management indicated that if I had brought the car in a little earlier than 30K miles...they would have supported applying the TSB.
I know...sounds like a line of BS....
Anyway, we reviewed all the conditions again and I pointed out the wear on the front brakes is something on the order of 200% higher on the rears and there's more weight on the front end of the car. He agreed and took the issue back to management for review. This time they agreed and will apply the TSB at no charge to me and they indicated that when they perform the TSB...they'll refund the costs I incurred associated with the rear brake work! WoooooHooooooo!
OK...read this next part carefully
If any of you with a car that is applicable to this TSB have any work done on your rear brakes...the dealer will NOT automatically apply the TSB. Further, there are different parts that they need to use and most dealers will likely just use the same shims that they removed to do the brake job in the first place.
Be aware and know what you need to consider.
Due to mutual schedules being all screwed-up...I'm not going to have the TSB applied until mid-December...I'm fine with that however.
So, the morals of this story...
1) Thank you Tundra Boards!
2) While I would not likely by a car from Frontier Toyota...I LOVE having my car serviced there!
signing off....

wow... i wish i would have read this sooner. I am at 34k and just had to replace the rear brakes today. Front pads are at 8mm and the rears were down to the metal. I just spent 249 dollars replacing them.
You might try to take it back to the dealer and ask for a refund as this TSB is in effect for 3 years or 36 months. Or you can contact the customer service # and tell them your story. 1-800-GOTOYOTA
Good luck and lets us know how it works out.

Call Toyota USA HQ (Torrance, CA) and complain like I did. I was assigned a case file number and they agreed to reimburse the cost of my rear pad replacement at 20kmiles. I should be expecting a check any day now.
I have a 2007 that was parked from March 27 until April 26. It was moved 13k during that period. On April 26 Toyota picked up my car as I can't drive (broken right leg). The car has 16K kilo and the dealer said all breaks need to be changed (rusted out and somewhat seized) since the car has not been driven for 2 months. They will not honor the warantee and I said that is not normal for breaks to become in that condition. They will get back to me. I wonder if I can get them that the breaks were not abused as defined in the contract. Anyone else think this is fishy or have the same problem?
