CamryGeneral discussion forum for the Toyota Camry.
This is a discussion thread titled "06 4 Cyl Camry Engine Strain at 1800 RPM", within the Camry forum, part of the Cars & Vans Forums category.
My 06 4 Cyl Camry has had an annoying noise whenever there is a strain on the engine and I am at 1800 RPM. Strain like going up a hill, accelerating slightly, people in the car, etc. It has been there since I bought it. Sounds similar to a hole in the exhaust but comes from up front. Dealer says that there is nothing wrong. Any similar experience or suggestions? I am a 3-time Camry owner (my son still drives number 2 at 245,000 miles), but I actually am starting to be really unhappy with this car.
What kind of noise? Buzzing? Rattling? How long does it last? A split second? Several seconds? Continuous if you maintain 1800 RPM continuously?
Try another dealer or Toyota specialty shop. The '06 4 cyl Camry's I have rented were models of smoothness and refinement - better than even the early '07 models.
Sounds like the baffle in the intake manifold is loose. This was very common on the 02- 04's. I have personally done an intake manifold on a 06 RAV (same engine), and several Camry's
You can not see it inside the manifold even with the manifold off, but there is a baffle that breaks loose and vibrates/buzzes at about 1500-2200 rpm, usually under load. Sometime IDLE or light acceleration(loaded).
Another thing could be maybe someone ran over or accidentally backed-up into something and bent the exhaust. (very common).
Just a few things to check.

Thanks for responding. The sound is a buzzing sound and is continuous as long as there is strain on the engine. I will take it to another dealer, but since this has been happening since day 1, I am hoping it is just something loose. Annoying, but loose.

I can't hear it from here.
Take it to a different dealer..........

Had a similar problem with my daughter's Mitsu Mirage. A weld on a heat shield let go and allowed the shield to vibrate, especially under load. Took a while to locate the source but a radiator hose clamp was the cure.
FWIW
YMMV
