Camry EV
Hi. I have a 1996 Toyota Camry.
Two mechanics said "it needs a new motor" -
So I had the engine taken out.
And now I am trying to put a big electric motor in.
(Already you could call it Zero Emmissions :-)
The Camry Engine is 36" wide.
I have a motor that is 22" long (wide transverse-mounted)
and I have a 1995 Saturn transmission (stick) that bolts
very nicely onto that motor, 15.5" - total is 35.5", cool!
I think that I need two things that I would like to
bounce off this group:
1. new half-shafts to connect Saturn Transmission to Camry hubs.
I have some ideas, would like to hear from others.
(note, I broke the elbows of at least one of the Saturn 1/2 shafts :-)
2. The Saturn transmission is a stick. The Camry was an auto.
My number 1 EV conversion expert said I should be able
to buy a used "Pedal Cluster" with 3 pedals, and it should
bolt in. I did not crawl under the car and look yet.
*Note, an electric car doesn't need much shifting,
but the transmission has a lot to offer, like on-demand
gear ratio selection...emergency drivetrain disconnect...
....and it is free...
Changing the motor to bolt to a camry transmission
would cost about $1,000.
More questions/details etc to follow...
