CamryGeneral discussion forum for the Toyota Camry.
This is a discussion thread titled "Anyone have the Toyota ipod interface kit?", within the Camry forum, part of the Cars & Vans Forums category.
I'm planning to purchase a 2009 Camry SE in the next month or so and want to be able to control my ipod from my JBL HU and the steering wheel controls. Toyota makes one but I can find no information on how it works. Many of the after market types don't turn the ipod on or off when switching modes or you can only use playlists and can't search through the actual artists and songs. Does anyone know if the Toyota unit will allow "full" control of my ipod Classic? If not, is anyone familiar with an after market unit that will allow all this and steering wheel control as well? I know my unit will have an auxiliary input but I'm looking to have full control and to be able to keep my eyes on the road. Thanks.
Hello. I havn't actually used it, but I pulled the manual from one that we have on the shelf. It says that the iPod is controlled by the satellite radio controls, and uses the same interface. Satellite radio is not able to be used while the iPod is connected.
You can search for songs using criteria from a preselected list, including Playlist, Artist, Album, Genre, Podcast and Audiobook. You can use the "Tune File Knob" or the steering wheel switches to skip to the next or previous song. The "Scan Button" tells the head unit to shuffle the songs on the iPod. (random play)
That's a basic overview of how the controls work. There are more advanced pages in the manual. I'd recommend going to your local Toyota dealer and asking them if they will pull a unit off the shelf and let you read the manual for yourself. The Toyota part number of the interface is PT545-00082.
I have it and it works great the sound quality is great and the functions are easy to use. The only thing I don't like is when scroling through the artists or songs there is only a number displayed you have to woit a few secs to display name then figure out alphabetticly where you want to go to get the song or artist you want. It's also easy to install plugs in back of radio but won't work with factory satilite thats the port it plugs into.
