Default Climate control issue on 2009 Cmary SE?

I am the proud owner of a brand-new 2009 Toyota Camry SE. This is my first new car since my divorce, heck my first in many years, and I am very pleased with the fit and finish of this vehicle. Being a former employee of the Kentucky plant where these are made (I work at a different facility now) I like to think my old friends knew this one was coming to me and were taking care of me.

I have noticed one minor issue though and I'm not sure if it's a defect or an undocumented "feature". It relates to the manual climate control system in my Camry. The climate control system will not stay in recirculation mode. The weather was extremely mild this morning. There was no need for heating, cooling or ventilation. Fogging up wasn't an issue. I had everything turned off and in recirculation mode. A few minutes down the road however, I noticed a burst of cool air blowing on me. I looked down and noticed the climate control system had switched from recirculation mode to outdoor air mode on its own. I thought it was a fluke and put it back in recirculation mode. Three minutes later, it went back to outdoor mode. This went on for the next thirty minutes on my drive in to work with me resetting to recirculation mode and the Camry switching to outdoor mode every three minutes. I couldn't find anything in the manuals that would explain this and it certainly makes no sense to me.

Has anyone else ever experienced this that can possibly explain to me the thinking behind this or is this a defect? I hate to take my baby back in for service when I haven't even had her a week yet but I don't want to wait too long if I need to get it checked out. Any information anyone might be able to provide would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Sincerely,
- Byron Followell

Can't you read? What part of "I couldn't find anything in the manuals that would explain this" did you not understand?! I did read the manual. I didn't read every single word on every single page but I did read through the entire section related to the climate control system and there was no mention of this behavior anywhere in it. If you want to help, then help. Telling someone to read their owner's manual when they've plainly stated that they've already done so is worthless.

njerald,

I'm sorry if I came across poorly in my response but I see many posts such as yours and they're usually meant in a smart alec, know it all sort of way. You may not have meant your post that way but that's the way I took it and if I misjudged you, I'm sorry. I did read through both the manual and my quick reference guide again though and can confirm that there is no reference whatsoever to the recirculation mode shutting off automatically. If this is normal operation for this model, you wouldn't know it from reading the manuals.

Per my 2007 manual::::::::::::::::::::::::::

------------------------------------------------------------

Air intake selector

To prevent fogging up of the windshield, the air intake mode may change automatically to FRESH depending on the condition of the air conditioning system.

If the ambient temperature drops, the air intake mode will automatically change from RECIRCULATE to FRESH after a few minutes. This automatic change control mode can be canceled bu pushing and holding the button for longer than 2 seconds.

The automatic change control mode will be reactivated if the ignition switch is sett at Acc or off.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Don't know about the later manuals but the car hasn't changed!

Thank you. That was much better than your original "advice". I can tell you for certain that the manuals have changed since your printing because there is no mention of this anywhere in any of the manuals that came with my 2009. Since I didn't have a 2007 or any other model Camry for that matter, there is no way I could've known. Thanks.

Right on.

Maybe they are saving ink with each manual now.

Nope. It looks like my Camry isn't defective but my manual is. I looked it up in the online manual at toyotaownersonline.com and found the exact same text you typed on page 197. I went back to my manual and guess what page my manual seems to be missing. Yep, you guessed it. Page 197/198. I wonder what other pages are missing from my manual? Must've been a problem at the binders that day.

I always thought that anybody who would put a Lexus logo on a Toyota was a D-bag......

Now he knows he is missing a page from his manual. Thanks.
