CamryGeneral discussion forum for the Toyota Camry.
This is a discussion thread titled "synthetic oil", within the Camry forum, part of the Cars & Vans Forums category.
I am using mobil one extended performace the 15,000 mile oil in my 06 camry I am now changing it at 5 k due to the warranty as soon as I leave the warranty I will change it at about 12,000 to 15,000 miles always checking the oil level at 5k to make sure it is at the full mark. I ran a 1986 toyota cressida to 429,000 miles using mobil one synthetic oil in the motor, transmission, rear end, and power steering and nothing failed. I am also using the mobil one synthetic transmission fluid in my 2006 camary in the transmission and power steering so far no problems. Starting in 2007 the camry transmission is using a special transmission fluid called world standard which goes 100k according to toyota and can only be replaced by toyota there is no dip stick on the 2007 and later toyota's tranmissions. The recommened transmission fluid for later toyota's 2006 and older is type 4 but I am going to see what happens with full synthetic transmission fluid.

Wrong, the GEN6 I4 automatics have a dipstick.
I don't believe Mobil1 is 100% synthetic but it is a high enough percentage to meet the "synthetic" label threshold although it is superior to straight dino or semi-synthetic oil.

- Is specificially designed by Toyota for Toyotas
- Is tested and approved by Toyota
- Is formulated for specific Toyota gasoline engines (e.g. 2007 on up Camry 4 cyl)
- Improves fuel economy
BUT, no matter how good Toyota oil may be, most owners would not consider using it because is dull and boring compared to synthetics that sound special and exciting like: "Royal Purple" "Mobil One" "Pennzoil Platinum" and which make sensational claims like "lasts 15,000 miles"
The top synthetic oils are as follows ams oil, royal purple, mobil one, and the rest follow up these are very close to 100% synthetic oil. The rest of the synthetics are following a close second but semi synthetic is way behind . Synthetic is now used in all high priced cars mercedes porche and etc. If you live in a cold climate or hot climate synthetic is the way to go it protects the engine in cold starts and proctects in very hot climate. TO GET A REAL PICTURE ON SYNTHETIC OIL GO TO GOOGLE AND PUT IN SYNTHETIC OIL AND HAVE FUN READING .
While I'm not in any way connected to the company or their products, let's not also forget AMSOIL products. Independent lab tests seem to indicate it's "better" than Mobil 1 in a number of categories like flashpoint and thin-film measurements. Take a look at: Tests prove AMSOIL synthetic oil beats the 10 top competing motor oils.
I've used their trans fluids for a few years in previous cars although not yet in my 07 Camry (mainly cuz it's a PITA to change the trans fluid in the Camry).
I know...another manufacturer hyping their own product...heck they all do it to some degree and I doubt that I would trust some shade-tree mechanic giving me a non-scientific opinion without numbers and hard data.
There also is some synth oil product from Japan...I forget the name now but it a local mechanic that only works on rice-rockets was RAVING to me about it.

BOLO MK33 I agree with you on ams oil but after talking to so may oil companies and reading so many reports on synthetic oil the difference between mobil one and ams oil royal purple and the other synthetic oils for the average car it dosen't really make a difference. The synthetic oils today are so good that the average person won't even come close to pushing the oil to it limits. Yes synthetic will make the engine last longer give a little better gas mileage and keep the engine clean and you can run the ams oil and mobil one extended performace to 15,000 miles. I mobil one in my transmission and now Toyota has come out with a new oil for the 2007 camry called WS or world service which is supposed to fully synthetic and you can run it 100,000 miles I would change it at 50,000 miles just for safety until we find out will it really hold up to 100,000 miles. Most car companies always give the american people the first new oils to test BECAUSE WE CAN TEAR UP MOST CAR BEST BY NOT SERVICING THEM. IF IT DOESEN,T FAIL WITH AMERICANS DRIVING IT IS THEN A GOOD PRODUCT.
I agree with all your points and your wonder at the various reports from the manufacturers. I don't have a lab in my garage to validate the claims -vs- results but awhile back there was a rather good video example of how good synth motor oil is -vs- the dino-juice. The video was put out by Mobil and while I don't recall all of the specifics it went something along this line...
- Take 100 Las Vegas, NV taxi cabs...
- Put dino-juice in 50...put regular Mobil-1 in 50
- Run them some number of miles that the operating company can justify for their routine service interval
- Disassemble the engines of 5 random cars from each set of tests
- Examine the results...
MAN was there a clear and obvious difference!
I agree that most residential drivers will NEVER push their cars to the limits that either a race or professional driver will...so it's basically "insurance" against oil related failures.
As far as the synth trans fluid is concerned...my service writer at the dealer indicated to me that the current WS fluid that they are using is a synth blend. Combine that with the sealed system and advanced wear sensors that they are using and the life goes WAY up on the usable life of the fluid.
My 07 Camry is not too far away from the 50K mark and I was planning on changing the fluid anyway (keep in mind that the trans was changed at 12K so it's more of a math kind of thing than actual mileage on the car). Now I'll certainly look into the WS synth fluid as a repalcement...it really is a PITA to change / check the fluid level.
BYW...just back from a 500+ mile weekend trip...
- 80% highway
- average speed well in excess of posted legal limits (can I say again that I love the 3.5L V6?)
- fair amount of hill-climbing (one goes from 150' to 4144')
- AC on almost all the time
- average mileage: 27+ MPG
OK...back to work for me...

Synthetic is too expensive for me. The advantage is that you don't have to change the fluids as often, but my thought is changing it more ofter at a lower cost is a better deal.

BOLOMK 33 I don't know as if I would use synthetic on my 07 camry I am hearing that the new ws fluid now being used by toyota and lexus is NOT THE same as standard synthetic fluid. I am going to call Amsoil to see if they have come up with a replacement for the ws fluid. There standard synthetic tans fluid will replace type 4 that toyota has been using for years uptill the new 2007 camary and later models. MY 1986 cressida went 429,000 miles on mobil one in the trans and motor and power steering and rear end and no problems ever. I AM THINKING THAT ON THE 2007 CAMARY AND LATER MODELS CHANGE THE WS TRANS FLUID AT 50,000 MILES JUST FOR PEACE OF MIND I KNOW TOYOTA SAY 100,000 MILES IS OK BUT I JUST FEEL BETTER DOING IT AT 50K.
Bolomk33 I Talked To Several Different Dealers And The Techs Said Change It At
50,000 Miles It Will Help The Trans In The Long Run. The New Fluid Ws. World Standard Is A Semi Synthetic And I Just Feel That Changing It At 50,000 Miles Will Make The Trans Last Longer. I Use Mobil One A Full Synthetic Oil And Change It Every 30,000 Miles I Need To Get At Least 250,000 Miles Out Of The Trans.
I use Mobil 1 synthethic 5W30 on my 04 Camry I4 and my 97 Avalon and both engines are still running strong and smooth. I have them both changed every 5-6K depending on when ever I have time to take it in. The Camry I4 now have over 133K and the Avalon have over 155K so far and both runs like new.
The new Mobil 1 0W30 is now available and I just had that changed last week on both vehicles and the engines seem to like the 0W30 even more than the 5W30. So far, I'm quite impressed with the 0W30 as the engine rev up quicker and seem to give me better gas mileage and runs quieter, too. I guess I will find out once I calculate the mileage driven after two tanks full on both vehicles.
Synthethic oil is the way to go if you want better protection, a little better gas mileage and to some (5-6K for me) longer interval between oil change.
