This is a discussion thread titled "1991 camry will not start", within the Camry forum, part of the Cars & Vans Forums category.
Hey guys, it's been a while since I've posted. I have a 1991 camry 2.0L that will not start. The battery and starter are fine. The battery was replaced just about two months ago and is still sending juice to the starter. The starter will turn the engine over with no problem, but it never catches. I've done several 8-10 second turns on the starter and have checked the exhaust and am smelling gas from the tail pipe, so it is getting gas. My mental diagnosis is the distributor, but I am also thinking possibly the coil. What would be your best guess? Any/all help is appreciated. Thanks.

Are you getting spark? You can check this by pulling a plug wire off and holding it near a good ground while someone else cranks it over. Look for a nice fat blue spark to jump from the plug wire to the ground.
Yes, I am getting spark. I pulled all four plug wires and checked them against the strut bolts and it's sparking fine. I checked and pulled the distributor and it's working fine. The rotor is new also. I'm guessing that since I'm getting spark, the coil is okay, also. After cranking, I checked the exhaust, and smelled gas fumes, so I'm supposing the gas pump is okay. Any other thoughts?

If the spark is OK, then that leaves fuel. While you note a fuel smell at the exhaust, the fuel pressure may be too low to atomize coming out of the injectors. You might also want to check the fuse for the fuel injectors.
Today, I pulled the intake tube from the air box and cranked it while shooting in starter fluid and it would not fire up. I guess I will be pulling out the injectors and inspecting them here shortly. It's the only thing left. All the fuses have been checked. Is there any way to check the fuel pump without draining and dropping the fuel tank? I don't think it's the pump, since it didn't fire with the injector fluid, so should I check it just in case? Thanks.

does your camry has a chipped key? if it does, you might want to check into that, if you have an extra master key you could try it, for some reason those keys fail after a while.

If it didn't try to fire with the starting fluid, your problem is likely spark, not fuel. I'd check inside the distributor cap first and look for any crud or corrosion.
Was there been a lot of rain in your area just before this problem occurred?
