1999 camry check engine code p 0420 My check engine light has been turning on for the past two months. I have 252,000 miles on the car, a 4 cylinder federal emission vehicle. While I was trying to figure out what was turning the ce light on, I discovered an exhaust leak at the flex joint, so I replaced the pipe which included the cat converter. I am still getting a check engine light that goes on after about 50 miles or so. I went to Auto zone and had the code read, P 0420. To me it seams unlikely that the cat is bad with both the old one and new one. Can someone offer any suggestions. Thanks Walt
I don't have a factory manual and I'm not so sure I have the knowledge or tools to be able to use it properly. It seems to me the people with the code readers can't figure out what is wrong, thats why I'm turning to knowledgeable people like all of you to help me out. Thanks Walt
Well thanks, njerald, Consider this. After driving this car for over 252,000 miles without a service manual, or sophisticated diagnostic tools, and without the first hand knowledge to apply their results, I think you must agree, I have made out fairly well. I was hoping to finds someone on this forum, with a brain and a willingness to help me solve a problem two different mechanics were unsure of. You certainly lack the first part of my need, so, if anyone else out there can help me out with this situation I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks Walt
A P0420 is a catalyst efficiency code. Most likely, based on the high mileage, your catalytic coverter is bad. It really needs to be properly diagnosed my a professional, and the dealer is best suited for this. Probably not a do it yourself job.
