Default Help!!! 07 Camry SE 4Cyl 20mpg on hw....

Hey Guys I need help with my car. I own an 2007 Camry SE 4 cylinders and the past 6 months it has been waisting gas like crazy... I have 60K mile and I've always done all the services on time. I use Synthetic Mobil 1 5/30 and Mobil 1 Oil filter, I have the kn&n air filter, I have also replace the spark plugs with NGK Iridium about $12 a piece. Besides that everything else is stock. Now the problem is that i'm driving like my grampa would because the gas MPG is killing me...I have to keep my RPM very low and drive 65-70mph at 2000rpm avarage. I'm getting about 19 - 21 MPG and that's on an 85hw/15city average. I only drive 1.5 miles to the freeway then drive 15 miles on the FW then 2 miles to my destination and then same way to go back home that's on most days. I fill up my thank every 200 miles, and if i only get about 315 miles PER THANK compare to 430-450 DODC when i bought it. I use premium gas only.
I took it to the dealership and they told me that it was going to cost me $ 150 just to see the car... which i think is outrageous for just inspecting it. Anyway i ended up taking it to my trusted mechanic and he told me not to take it to the dealership because more or less (what i understood) they were going to open my engine and that was going to affect my car in the long run... and he also said if the check engine light it's not on he can't tell me what's wrong with the car.

Can anybody help me, I don't know what to do and I don't want to pay $600+ to the dealer... with that money i could get me my Fujita cold air intake amd a nice exhaust system. Which i have not bought because of the gas consumption

Just a guess...those NGK Iridium's could be causing problems? They may be getting to hot, burning the pistons, throwing off the timing. You may want to replace those with the factory plugs. I put some split fires in my 98 corolla and had all of the issues that I mentioned right around 60k miles. Good luck!!

If you paid that much for spark plugs you were ripped off. They are only $8 each retail.

Did you get the right Iridium plugs?

You need 1FR6T11, Laser Iridium Long Life.

and you might also try the Toyota specified oil weight in the engine, 0w20 or 5w20.......

..

Several makes of vehicles have had problems with the oil used on the K&N filters slowly migrating to the MAP Sensor and confusing the computer. Sometimes cleaning the sensor gently remedies the condition.
Carbon build-up in the injector tips could be a cause or garbage in the fuel filter.
Good Luck and keep us posted…

Have a good one while you can still laugh about it.. Don S..

Yeah i remember paying like $8 a piece for the spark plugs, they did not have the $12 on stock.

I'm also using 5w20 Mobil full synthetic.

I called the dealership today and they told me that the gas consumption for my car is ok, that's the average for my car... which i think is odd because i used to get a lot more mileage. Also they told me because I replace the tires and I installed Khumo tires (obviously cheaper than toyo) they have more resistance and consumes more gas......

Can you Camry owners let me know the average MPG they get...

Now about the Laser iridium Long Life plugs i thinks those are the ones
I have...

Yes, you should clean your MAF sensor about every 30,000 miles.

The sensor is easily removed from your intake.

Use MAF or electrical contact cleaner only.

Don't use carb cleaner or other cleaners.

Don't touch the wires!

OK thanks for the tip. I was a little confused with the MAP sensor... iI thought it was another one.

Where do i get the cleaner? at the local autozone? should I ask for MAF Sensor Cleaner or Electrical contact cleaner right?

I've been wanting to replace my stock intake with the kn&n CAI but i have not because if the mileage gets worse the dealer is going to say it's just the CAI you get me...

I never set foot in Autozone. Not much selection and high prices.

Most parts stores have it. Either one.

Do you have the correct spark plugs?

Your trouble is all self inflicted.....you'd still be getting 430 miles per tank if you had kept the car 100% stock. Stock wheels, tires, filters, spark plugs, etc.

The trouble with experimenting with mods is that no one can tell you how to fix all the unpleasant side effects that result from installing mods. They can only advise returning the car to stock and then hope there was no permanent damage and hope the side effects are reversible.

So in your original post you didn't know how much you paid for the plugs, whether they were the right ones or not, didn't get the oil viscosity correct and on top of that are using premium gas instead of regular.

I've had enough....have fun.

Well i had ordered the Iridium Plugs that cost about $12 but they did not have those on stock, instead I took the NGK Laser iridium at $7.99 wich i was told both by autozone crew and dealership that they were the right ones. And yes i use premium unleaded fuel usually mobil.

For the oil I use Mobil1 full synthetic 5w20. That is what the engine recomends and as I was told by the dealership this car requires to keep the same viscosity regardless of the miles in the car...

In the Specifications section of your owners manual it tells you the exact part number of the Denso spark plugs to use. If you order these plugs from a Toyota dealer you'll get the genuine Toyota version of these Denso plugs which come pregapped to the spec that will maximize your gas mileage. And if you order these plugs from Bob Bridge Toyota
1st Toyota Parts - Discount Toyota Parts & Accessories below wholesale you get a 28% discount off the MSRP price of $10.37 , so you pay only $7.57 each.
