Default Programming Home Link for Garage Door

My friends 08 Camry has the 3 button home link. We tried to get it to work with his garage door opener but had no luck. The opener is a 2-3 year old Chamberlain with the purple button and the little echo signal (NOT the security+ type with the orange button). The owners manual says hold the garage door opener to the homelink for 20 seconds until it blinks fast. Then it says you have to press the purple button on the opener and then press the homelink either 2 or 3 times until it opens. None of that seemed to work. What is the trick to getting this working? I hope its possible, because then I can program his car to my garage door too (same opener type).

We emailed homelink and they said this, which is probably what your link says, but its coming up blank for me. why its not in the owners manual, I dont know. but the below did work.

    __________________________________________________ ___________________
Please make sure that people and objects are out of the way of the moving
door when programming to prevent potential harm or damage.

NOTE: Some vehicles may require the ignition to be turned on or to the
second (or"accessory") position for programming and/or operation of
HomeLink. It is also recommended that a new battery be replaced in the
hand held transmitter of the device being programmed to HomeLink for
quicker training and accurate transmission of the radio frequency. Please
use a ladder and do not stand on your vehicle during the programming steps
    for a rolling code opener.

    Rolling Code Programming:

    1. Press and hold the two outer HomeLink buttons until the indicator
light begins to flash (after 20 seconds)or the display reads "Channels
Cleared". Do not hold for longer than 30 seconds. Do not repeat this
step to program additional HomeLink buttons.

    2. Place the hand-held transmitter 1-3 inches from the HomeLink button
    you want to program.

    3. Simultaneously, press and hold both your HomeLink button and your
hand-held transmitter. Do not release either button until step 4 has
been completed. (If you reside in Canada, refer to the "NOTE" below.)

    4. When the indicator light changes from a slow blink to a rapid flash or
the display reads"Channel Trained", release both HomeLink & hand held
    transmitter buttons.

    5. Then go to your garage door opener motor head unit in the garage.
Locate the "Program" or "Learn" button. Usually near the hanging antenna
wire on your garage door opener motor head unit. (The name of these
buttons vary by manufacturer, please see your garage door openers owners
manual for the location of this programming button).

    6. Press and release the "Program" or "Learn" button once, like a door
bell (1 second)(Do not hold this button down. Holding this button down for
too long will erase all Remotes, Keypad and other HomeLink equipped
vehicles). There is 30 seconds in which to initiate step 7.

    7. Then go to your vehicle and firmly press and hold your already
programmed HomeLink button for three seconds and release. Do this
procedure a second time and depending on the Brand of your garage door
opener you may need to do this step a third time to complete the process.

The garage should now activate when the programmed HomeLink button is
firmly pressed and released. If not, give us a call or refer to the
    "Troubleshooting Tips" noted below.

I have a 07 camry hybrid and did not have trouble to program the car remote for the last garage door opener. Now I have a new Chamberlain with battery backup garage door opener. I press the outside 2 buttons of the three for 20 seconds, the led flash steady, not fast. Then I perform the step 3 and the led blinks steady, not fast. I press the LEARNING button (yellow) on the garage door opener, its yellow led lights solidly. The I press the car's selected garage door button and release, nothing happens. after trying three times, it still does not work. If I press the car button for too long, around 20 seconds, the led for the 3 buttons in the car blink again. I never get the led flash from slow to rapid on any configurations.

    My questions are:
    (1) Should the led always blink from slow to fast to indicate something is done successfully?
    (2) How long the button has to press when doing the learning in the car? Are there any indication (led) to tell the button has done something successfully? I had tried three seconds press and hold, do not work either for me.
