I need some help with my 2001 camry 4 cyl with 120k miles. I got a check engine light a few weeks back and disconnected the battery to clear the codes. But when I went for an emissions test the guy failed me because the care was not ready. So I borrowed a OBII code reader and it shows the "EV" sill flashing meaning its not ready yet. For a couple weeks I have had p0440 and P0441 pending and today finally got the check engine light on and with a new code of P0446 sill the "EV" is flashing. I have checked the solenoid valves by actuating them across the battery and they all worked fine. I have inspected all the vent hoses and canister and they all look good also. Any suggestions for a next step would be great. I am afraid to take it to the dealer because i dont trust any so i appoligize in advance if you work at one. I would rather do it myself if all possible.

Use the Search function to see other Camry experiences and/or follow the troubleshooting steps in your Toyota Service Manual.
If you can't do that, take it to the dealer.

these 3 codes are very common on this vehicle the majority of them are simply a gas cap try replacing it with a new one A TOYOTA GAS CAP not a aftermarket it cost about 18 dollars list price if this is not the problem the codes will set in a couple of drive cycles it is a 2 trip detection logic. if this happens the cannister is more than likely the problem.
ok so i bought a Toyota cap since i had an aftermarket one and reset the code and I'm waiting to see what happens. Does anyone know if when you take the fuel cap off its supposed to hiss at you like it has some pressure behind it or is it not?
This is normal noise most of the time and it is more than likely not pressure but a vaccume on the tank from the evap system
Bingo, that's why those codes set--when the evap system doesn't hold a vacuum. The computer instructs the evap system to pull a vacuum on the tank (using engine vacuum), then isolates it with those solenoid valves to check for leaks. If pressure increases due to a leak, it will set the DTC. That's why the DTCs set if you don't tighten the gas cap all the way.

Thanks thats good information. Just to update I changed the cap out with a Toyota one and reset the codes but I am having problems getting the EVAP monitor to turn to "ready". I followed the drive pattern (EG003-02 drive pattern #6 EVAP) of the 13 deg temp difference then 3000 rpm for 10 seconds and then let it idle with a slight load. I did this test twice on different days and let it idle for like an hour and nothing! I have a scan tool now so i can check the air temp and coolant temps more accuratly. But any other suggestions would be great thanks
the monitor will run every time after a cold soak overnight if it is not extreamly hot or cold outside if you drove it for more than a week and no mil has come on consider it fixed. the moniter only runs once a day when the coolant temp reaches around 170 degrees it is very fast only about 30 seconds long
ya its been about a week and there is no pending codes but the Evap is still not "ready" which means I can't get the emissions test done yet. I really need to figure out how to make this monitor ready faster so I can get my emissions or fix something if I do pull a code.

If your Service Manual procedures/diagnostics don't cover it>>>>>>>>>>>dealer.....

just to update... i made a resistor box to help run the evap test and sure enough i was able to get it to run bad part is that it gave me p0441 and p0446 so i ordered a vapor canister today in hopes that this will fix it. The canister comes with i think a pressure sensor and a valve so everything is gona be changed at one time.
