Default Manual 5 speed shifter noise

I just got my wife a 07 SE and she loves the car, don't think I will ever get to drive it but I did take her to the airport I got to drive it home. What was interesting to me is the shift linkage and the sounds it makes. I have always had toyota trucks and currently have a 87 4x4 and a 2000 tundra 4x4 both with the 5 speed manual. The shifter in the trucks go into the transmission and you can hear the tranny and the camry has linkage in the cabin that goes to the transmission. The camry sounds clunky especially when it is in neutral when you move it side to side to make sure you aren't in gear like at a light. Has anyone tried some sound material on the inside of the shifter area to make it a little quieter? It just sounds cheap. Might put some material down under the carpet too to quiet the road noise a little.
