CamryGeneral discussion forum for the Toyota Camry.
This is a discussion thread titled "Camry DVD-Based Navigation System", within the Camry forum, part of the Cars & Vans Forums category.
Does anyone know how often updated map DVDs are available for the Denso Nav unit in a 2003 Camry. My Camry was built in Japan and was driven by a Toyota Corporate employee in or around Torrance CA. It's build date is September 2002 so I'd imagine updated DVD maps have been released since then. I'm curious how much these are $ if they are available. I don't see Nav units being available as an option out of the Chicago district so I doubt a disk would be an in stock item here in Minnesota. I could check at my local dealer but I thought I'd run it by someone here first.

If a combo of all these whizz bangs met their claims you'd have to syphon gas out of your tank every second day and sell the excess horsepower on the third????

Reason: add to title
I can see this is not a good topic question is it?

Thanks Peid. I thought maybe someone had experience with these because of some of the Nav conversions that'd been done using the Camry system. I've been looking on ebay and several other places for a DVD version more current than mine. I'll swing by the dealer today and see what's available and a cost. Then I'll have a baseline for any online shopping I do. Other than main highways the Nav is limited street wise to larger cities anyway and Minnesota doesn't have all that many of those. Tis a neat toy though and maybe next time I venture into St Paul where I can always get lost this thing may keep me on track. But then the voice commands may just start blubbering like I do when I'm there. Something wrong with a place where blocks are in the shape of obtuse triangles.

I just returned from the Toyota dealer and getting a price for the 2004 version of the Navtech map DVD for our 2003 Camry's Navigation system. Can you believe over $900 for one DVD. How in the he!! can Delorme sell their GPS version of Street Atlas for less than $100 and Toyota wants WHAT? The parts guy is going to check with the regional Toyota rep next week to see why the horrendous price. I can see why an individual would want to pirate something like this and not piddle with some music for crying out loud. I'm going to check with OEM Radio to see if they have an alternative method. Holy crap it'd be better for a thief to pop the trunk and steal the DVD than to take the time to rip off the dashboard Nav System.

That can't be right. $900! Sounds like it would be easier to burn a copy from someone else. If that is possiable. Sounds like I should burn a copy of my original incase someone steals it.

I'd be curious if copies can be burned or if it's encrypted in some way to disallow any copies. I see Nav DVDs for BMW's all over on E-bay and they're supposedly new ones for $150. They're Navtech map DVDs which is also the supplier to Toyota. I just don't want to take the chance that the Denso DVD player that Toyota uses would read it. I imagine one would see the BMW logo on start up instead of the Toyota logo if it did boot.

Thought I'd better update this thread. Steve G responded to my PM query and he said he'd sell me the latest version they have ( a 2003 version mine's a 2002) for $ 250. That's a whole lot better than the $900 estimate I'd gotten locally. I'm going to hold off a while to see if a 2004 version will come out before year end.

This is a question for Camry owners with the navigation option. Do you feel it is worth the price? I don't do much out of town driving, but I am considering it because it may enhance resale later.

It happened to be in the used 03 Camry we just bought in June. It's not something we wanted but the dealer lowered the price additionally when I said I didn't want to pay for the Nav. It's kind of neat actually but more as a novelty than a necessity. It will not pay for itself on a trade in or sale price. While it may enhance the sale market it's the car itself that sells.

I am really not knowledgeable about navigation systems, but does anyone know if they are targets for thieves? Out here, we had problems with air bag thieves for awhile. The reason why I ask this question is that I am struggling with including this option for the Camry I plan to purchase.

Well, I'll tell you, I have the same concern here in the Minneapolis area. I'm pretty certain I won't be taking our Camry with the Nav downtown to any Viking or Twins games at the Metrodome. Target Center where the Timberwolves play has a parking structure with cameras and physical security so that would concern me less. I know why public officials build sports venues in the crime pits but I still feel they'd have better attendance numbers if they built them in safer areas.
What concerns me more about the Nav units in the Camry's is that you can't hide or disguise it very easily. It sets right the middle of the dash panel like a small TV screen and the printed antenna for the system is pretty obvious along the upper part of the windshield. Any thief with an order for one would be educated enough to spot that with a drive by.
We like the system and it has many advantages but unfortunately theft deterrent isn't one of them. I did add additional theft security to the engine immobilizer system that came with it but a professional worth their salt would rip it off and be gone before any response.
Good Luck on whatever you decide.

Larry, I live in California and there are many sleazy neighborhoods around where I live. Car thefts in Central Calif. are some of the highest in the nation. Hondas, Toyotas and Saturns are the big targets. I can really see a thief being attracted to a nice Camry with navigation. From what you say about the cost of the DVD map, I have pretty much decided against the nav option. Thank you for all your info.
