Sorry to introduce yet another problem but you all seem to be extremely helpful.
We've got a 2000 Corolla, the CEL has turned on 3 times before(Which we just reseated the gas gap, reset the ECU and went on our way), however this is the fourth time and we're now accepting that it's NOT the gas cap.
We get errors P0446 and P0440.
I've done some research, and it my best guesses are the Bypass VSV or the CCV VSV. Unfortunatly, I have not found a way to test them and such.

Advice?
TiA.
With a p0440 AND p0446, I would say the OVERFILL CHECK valve is probably cracked and has contaminted the charcoal canister with raw fuel.
The Overfill check valve is common to crack (p0440)
A p0446 is usually caused by an internal leak inside the canister.
You really need a TOYOTA scan tool to test them the best and watch the pressure inside the tank and canister, as they can be activated with the TOYOTA scan tool.
The pdf is an inspection procedure, but requires a pressure tester (toyota) and the toyota scan tool.
The CCV can be tested by applying batter voltage and a ground and see if it clicks and your able or not able to blow thru it.
Good Luck

If your only getting a P0446 on your SOLARA (99).
There is a TSB for a vac valve assy that has been changed on the canister.
Truthfully it doesnt work, and the whole canister assy has been changed, I recommend changing the canister assy, it comes with the new stuff already incorporated into it.

My check engine light has been on for about a year now. I now have moved to a state that requires emission inspections. How do I determine what the problem is? It sounds as if it could ba any of the above

Go to just about any parts store (checker auto, kraggen ect..)
they will usually read codes for free.
Once you have a DTC (fault code), then you know what area to look for a problem.
There is over 100 things to turn on the "CHECK ENGINE" light.

Greeting. I came across this board after searching for Charcoal canister for my camry. I have been very active on another toyota forum.
My car: 2.2 Camry 2000
This is my problem:
P441 and P446 (verified by autozone and dealership)
A lot of people are saying that it is a VSV problem. They told me that it is a custom part that they must order and it cost $60 (do not have part #). They have a Charcoal cannister assembly (77740-06170) which included the VSV, and another part (89460-07030 and 90910-12264) for $260. I took the charcoal cannister assembly.
Am I replacing the right part. I plan to do it tomorrow.
A. Diagnostics for PO441:
1. Remove Vacuum Hoses between EVAP VSV and Charcoal Canister and discard.
2. If there is a metal vapor pipe between EVAP VSV and Charcoal Canister, clean inside of vapor
pipe
3. Replace EVAP VSV and Charcoal Canister assembly with new parts.
4. Install new vacuum hoses between EVAP VSV and Charcoal Canister.
B. Diagnostics for P0446:
1. Inspect vacuum hoses and pipes between EVAP (Purge) VSV and Charcoal Canister for leaks.
2. Replace Vapor Pressure VSV and Canister.
NOTE :When performing diagnostics for an occurrence of a MIL "ON" condition, Diagnostic
Trouble Code (DTC) P0441 may be result of debris in Evaporative Emission Control System. This
may cause blockage of a vapor line, or a stuck VSV, as described in troubleshooting area of Repair
Manual.
Hi guys Thanks for all the info on this thread I did some investigation this morning. 2001 Solara 140,000K 3.0 L manual.. Had a P0446 for some time now. It came on the morning I fueled up with car running. Filled tank and took off. The CEL light came on.
Steps taken tighten fuel cap NO CURE.
Check ohms on the VSV for Canister Closed Valve on air filter 32 Ohms and when powered it opened and closed using jumper wires..
Check VSV for Evap under cover on engine 27 Ohms and it salso works with jumper wires.
Check VSV for Pressure Switching valve underneath on canister 40 Ohms but would not switch with jumper wires. Disassemble valve found a rusty spot on the cap inside that closes the port. Cleaned it up with sand paper and reassembled. Now it works with jumper wires. Clear codes and drove 50 miles so far so good ... We'll see in a couple days! DC
Does any one know if there is a TSB for the 2004 Camry for the charcoal canister. My problem is the Service Engine Soon light is on and it doesn't want to let the gas get into the tank when filling. It takes gas very slowly, like the tank is already full even when it is empty. The dealer first said it was a loose fuel cap, but that didn't work and then they said it was the charcoal filter and was going to cost $500 to replace. Any one have any ideas? And is this a DIY project?

No, there is no TSB for an 04 Camry Canister.
Service engine soon = Time for an oil change, it comes on every 5,ooo miles. Was it reset properly the last time you had an oil change?
There could be a number of causes FOR THe vehicle not accepting fuel.
1: Gas station pump ( very common, try another station)
2. Over fill check valve in fuel tank leaking
3: charcoal canister flooded with fuel
4: ccv-vsv stuck open
It takes the TOYOTA SCAN TOOL and someone who knows how to read and interpret the readings of the vapor pressure sensor to find out the correct problem.

I was wrong it was the "Check Engine" light not the service engine soon. Is there anything I can do to make sure they tell me the correct problem before they start replacing parts?
Just had a 02 Tacoma come in today, that couldnt be filled with fuel.
There was a piece of candy in the fill pipe rubber hose where it attaches to the tank.
Be aware of ex (wives/husbands).
