Default Changing oil and filter in Camry

My wife has a 2003 Camry and consistently goes over the 3000-4000 miles on oil changes. She's a hottie and hates taking it to the dealer or iffy lube because she usually gets hit on by a customer or someone that works there. So I usually take it in to the dealer because I trust them a bit more than iffy lube.

I decided that I would change the oil and filter on her car like I do on our Sequoia and Tacoma. I forgot what a pain it was to change oil on a car compared to a pickup. So before I screw things up, I would appreciate how you guys/gals change your oil and filter on your Camry. By the way, where is the oil filter on a 4 cylinder Camry?

Change the oil at 5000 miles.

Thanks KLS you gave a brilliant answer to my question. I will just pay the dealer to change the oil and ask them questions about DIY oil changes on a Camry.

I looked in the shop manual I have for our 03 Camry about where the oil filter is located for the four cylinder engine. Pretty vague illustration but it appeared to be located towards the right front (towards the grill right headlight area) of the engine. It's mounted in a face down attitude accessible from the top. The engine requires four qts of oil with the filter change. I use a PureOne Purolator 10241 on our V6 Camry and I'm not sure the same filter fits the I-4. You can always get the filter from your Toyota dealer to be certain. Hope this helps a little.

Cool

Hi Larry,

I looked in the area where you told me and I could not find the oil filter. I called a local Toyota dealership and they told me that the oil filter was located on the driver's side near the oil cooler. I checked that area and still could not find it. The oil filter on a 4cylinder Camry is not visible when you open the hood to view the engine. I guess the oil filter is located somewhere underneath the engine.

I will just take the Camry to the dealer to do the oil/filter change and have them show me where that @%$^$ oil filter is hiding. This the reason I prefer pickups over automobiles because it's a lot easier to work on your vehicle.

Thanks Larry for your help.

Thanks Glenn the illustration you have is much better than the one I had. The four cylinder filter access location is from beneath the engine and it appears to be at the drive belt end of the engine. I wish my V6's access was from the bottom also it'd be a lot less messy to change.

Thanks Glenn for the illustration I now have the power to change the filter on my wife's Camry. I got carried away there. Watching too many cartoons with the kids.

On my 2003 4 cyl, the filter is immediately in front of the drain plug. It appears you MUST have a socket to get it out - there's no way to grab it from any side. And I can't imagine trying to get it out from above. It's under the AC compressor.

Changing the oil on our Camry, buying a set of those plastic ramps makes it 10 times easier.

Default Re: Changing oil and filter in Camry

I found the oil filter on my 04 Camery (4-cyl) is located in the lower front if the engine on the passenger rt side. It is accessable from below. I found the oil filter wrench I had purchased from my dealer was slightly oversized and had great fifficulty removing the filter. I later went to a motorcycle dealership and purchased an Imperial Oil Filfter Wrench #IF-6514 65MM 14 Flute. This wrench fits a little extra snug so it is important to "back it off" the filter before removing the filter completely from the threaded post.....Good Luck
