Default Power lock problem 1996 Camry LE sedan

Hello, would appreciate some ideas on what might be causing the driver's side power locking switches (both the key cylinder switch and the inside push button switch) to not work (not even a sound can be heard, circuit is not energized at all). At the same time, the driver side power unlocking switches (both key cylinder and inside push button) work normally. The passenger side power locking and unlocking switches (key cylinder and inside push-button) work fine. Since the passenger side locking switch locks all four doors, I figure that my actuators are all good? I replaced the push button lock/unlock switch on the driver's side but still have problem. Don't know if this is related to the locking problem but my power side mirror adjustment control does not work for the driver's side mirror but does work for the passenger side mirror. Am I dealing with some sort of wiring problem? Where should I be looking?

Thanks mucho!

Let me check my notes tomorrow and i will try to get back to you ASAP.
It sounds like the micro switch built into the drivers door latch (inside the door).
Anything aftermarket added? alarm? stereo? battery changed recently?just curious.

Thanks for the quick response! I just bought this car used for my wife so I don't know if there is anything after-market added or how old the battery is. However, unless Kenwood CD/Radio was stock item for 96 Camry (this is the audio system installed in this car), I'd have to assume that the audio system is after-market. The car has no alarm system.

Here is a PDF that will help you test the inner workings of the door lock system. There is a unlock switch on the back of the drivers cylinder and key and a micro switch in the latch mechanism. You may or may not have the switch on the key portion, due to the fact you dont have the factory alarm.
Use the PDF's as a guide.
Since it wont unlock or lock with the key, that tells me there is something wrong with the latch mechanism, and that would be the first place to start.

mustang, before I start to disassemble driver's door I would like to check the door lock relay first. When I inspected behind kick panel and under hood I could not find this relay...is it in the door?

Thanks

Thanks
The door lock relay is in the passenger side kick panel (D8), see attachment.
Make sure the clips on the door key cylinder are ok when you get the door panel off. Make sure all linkages are functioning properly and that the small spring inside the latch mechanism is intact.

Thanks mustang, using the pdf files you posted I tested latch microswitch and actuator. The microswitch tested good but the motor/actuator turned out to be defective. I will be installing new latch mechanism as soon as I can get the part.

Hello,

Would you mind sending me a copy of the PDF file? I have problem with the power locks of my '96 camry DX.
Driver's side will lock all doors but will not unlock them. The indoor lock button does not work for unlock once the doors are closed (I tried it with the window down). Actually, neither the lock key nor the indoor button will unlock the car once the dome light door switch turns the light off. The circuit seems dead
AS for the passenger side, the door key lock unlocks all doors. However, if you try the indoor button it will not unlock unless you first operate the door's own manual lock; if you do that then the system gets energized and both indoor buttons will work.
I can figure out testing procedures but without a wiring scheme I am pretty much lost. Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks

Hello,

Could someone also email me (bmars@yahoo.com) the PDF file? My '96 Camry has the exact same problem as described in this thread.

Thanks!

A few years ago I also had problems with my door locks and mirror on my '96 - the problem ended up being broken wires in the harness between the door and body. It seems that the wires break here due to the repeated flexing by the opening and closing of the door. I ended up splicing in new wiring in the area of the hinge point of the harness (covered by the flexible rubber boot).

Ditto on last post I cant count how many broken wires in the door I have fixed. Pull the left kick panel off and pull the harness through the door. Cut the tape off the harness and roll the boot back. You will have to fish for the door side of the broken wire. Try to push the broken wire back out you can feel the end through the rubber of the boot.
