Default 2007 Camry V-6 Manual Shift Mode

I test drove a 2007 Camry XLE V-6. I have always driven a stick, but, have come to warm up to the manual shift mode auto transmissions.

The 07 Camry shifts very nice, but, I was disappointed with the fact that it does not automatically shift back to 1st gear when you come to a stop like the Acura. For example, if you manually take it to "5" (5th gear) and then come to a stop, your dash will continue to read "5". Meaning when you start back up, it will essentially be in AUTOMATIC mode (even though your stick is slapped into the gated MANAUAL mode area) until your speed automatically reaches 5th gear (at that point, you could manually shift it into 6th gear).

The logic makes little sense to me. But, Acura TL's logic of automatically upshifting from 1st gear to 2nd gear (even if in MANUAL mode) makes as little sense.

Just wanting to get the feedback from others; did I miss something on the Camry or is there a work-around?

You mean you can shift it up from 1 but are too lazy to shift it back to one?? Put it in auto then!!

I think of it as "giving a suggestion" to the transmission.
My '07 XLE V6 won't let me downshift to 1st gear when I'm doing 60 mph either.
The tranny has the final word and won't let you intentionall do damage
to it.
If I understand you correctly since you placed the trans in 5th you think it should read your mind a shift to 1st gear when you reach a stop and stay in 1st until you upshift? To me that doesn't make any more or less sense than what the trans is doing now.
In your case I think if you want to prevent it from upshifting you'll need to
manually downshift to a lower gear(s) while decelerating or when reaching a stop.

Drive an Acura or BMW and you'll understand the concept. Their implementation makes far more sense than Toyota's. If in manual shift mode and you come to a stop; it puts you in 1st gear. When you take off again, you're still in MANUAL mode.

That's not the case in the Camry; it reverts to AUTOMATIC mode up thru the last gear you manually shifted to. The logic is lame.

SUGGESTION TO TOYOTA: study Acura's implementation of manual shift mode; it's superior.

SUGGESTION TO ACURA: get rid of the automatic 1 -> 2 shift when in manual shift mode, and you have the perfect concept.

And to njerald, yeah, I'm too F'n lazy to shift it back.

I agree with you, its lame, and I wondered about the logic (or lack of). It appears to be the same unfortunate logic that makes the XLE ventilation system go into recirc mode every time you start the engine. Weird. Couple that with passenger dash on my car that does not fit together right and the ongoing transmission problems I'm having makes me regret that I ever purchased my 07 Camry XLE V6. The worst part about it is that I'm not the only one with these problems.

oh well...
