Default Acceleration - 4 cylinder camry

I just bought a new camry, 4 cylinder. I really wanted the V6 but wasn't into spending the extra buck on gas. I'm concerned, however, about the pickup and acceleration ability with the 4 cylinder, that it's very weak. Can anyone tell me their experience so far with the 4 cylinder engine?

I can't speak for the 2007 Camry, but we have an 05 Camry and an 06 Rav 4 that have the 2.4 liter, 4 cylinder (as far as I know the 07 has the same 4 cylinder as both of mine). You will not regret purchasing the 4 cylinder. They have plenty of get up and go and get great gas mileage, too. Acceleration is smooth and depending on how heavy your foot is, will go as hard and fast as you need it to, plus you'll be getting great gas mileage. We average over 29 mpgs with 50/50 driving and averaged almost 36 mpgs on a 3,000 mile trip last summer with the cruise regularly set around 80.

Good luck. You bought a great car, so enjoy it.

James

As you can tell my from my sig, I also bought a new Camry. Great looking car, BUT the low end rpm is powerless unless you nearly floor it! Then add in A/C and you get less power, I'm not too pleased by this and regretting trading in my '03 Tundra V6! Strangely enough when accelerating when you hit 4000 RPM, the car gets a boost of power, very strange powertrain!

I am eagerly awaiting some aftermarket products to be released, ie Cold air Intakes..etc. Although, because of the Camry's emissions, it may be difficlut to add too much aftermarket without voiding one warranty or another. It is a PZEV (Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle) after all. The Camry is not known for much of a customizable car, in the engine comparment.

All that said, it still was a worthwhile investment on my part with the feul savings and a growing family.

Congrats on your purchase BTW!

I couldn't help, but to response to your post because I do have a 4 cyclinder Camry as well. Granted, mine is the older 04 version, but not much difference when it comes to engine and finding performance upgrade for the car. I didn't buy the car for performance purpose, but rather family need and gas mileage, but I still would like a little more oomph out of the engine department.

I was mainly looking to upgrade the front sway bar and air intake, but there really isn't any that I could find except a drop-in K&N air filter which help a little bit from what I could tell. Super unleaded would be the best performance improvement for $3 more per tank full.

Notes and tips: The K&N filter will improve the flows only if you take out the thin filter that's built-in inside the top airbox before the intake air flow sensor detection. If you just drop-in the K&N filter without taking the Toyota built-in thin filter, it's really a waste since that built-in filter will limit the flows after the K&N filter.

I have an 07 LE w/4cyl auto and about 2600 miles. I agree the low end power just isn't there with the trans in D. I experimented with the gated shifter this past weekend and found that the power seems to come on faster with a little shifter work. My 02 Tundra has spoiled me with what I think is a seemless power band. I'm getting 22 city and 27 highway, still looking for the advertised 24/34 on the Camry.

Give it some time and the engine will give you that. Currently, the engine is still tight so it may not provide the above claimed until fully broken-in. My 4 cylinder Camry average about 28.6 mpg (used to be 29.3 mpg until the upgrade tires/rims 225/50/R17 that goes about 1 mph faster than the speedo say) with combined 50/50 city/hwy with AC running all the time in Arizona.

You should see the same result after the engine have a few thousands more miles on it. I recommend using synthetic oil 5W-30 for improve gas mileage and better engine protection.

My XLE is fine, from either a standing start or to pass.

It should do 0-60 in under 9 seconds.

V6 about 6.2 seconds.

I have an 2002 camry, and before i bought it i passed over plenty of nice Camrys with I4 just to get the V6. I know all about the I4, having driven many of them before i settled on mine. And while the I4 isnt too gutless, I'm really glad i chose the V6. BTW i get about 25 mpg, in LA traffic no less, more on long trips when you dont have stop and go. (Unfortunately in LA/OC where i drive, those occasions are rare!) For most Camry drivers, if you keep a light foot I believe your mpg will be fairly close to the I4 cars.

You may have to wait a few years - the '07 EPA is 24/33.

I get 32 mpg at 70-75 mph with 4 male golfers and 4 sets of golf clubs with my '07 XLE I4.

My average for 2,500 miles of mixed driving is 26.74 mpg. My trip meter averages 1.2 mpg higher than actual.
