Default How do I remove the radio - 2005 Camry

Hello all,

This is my first posting here and really appreciate the chance to have a discussion on my project.

I'm trying to install the XM radio adapter and the instructions seem straightforward except for one detail that has me baffled: It says to remove the air conditioner controls and the radio by using a "nylon removal tool" around these. I've tried gently prying around these units with several nylon tools I have and can't figure out how I get to the clips that they say are in there.

Anybody have any drawings or pointers as to what I'm not seeing behind the dash? Obviously this is a very visible area and I don't want to break or mar anything.

Thanks for your help,

Calvert

This guy has a decent write up with a pic or two. Those AC controls can be an absolute beast to remove. You have to just yank the piss out of them. The upper clip on the passenger side has hung the two times I've taken mine off and the yellow plastic clip winds up falling down into the dash. Fun stuff for sure.

Hi Calvert

Just did this today in my 2005 Camry

I followed instructions that showed reaching your hand around the back of the air conditioning panel and pushing on one of the tabs. I did this and then it was possible to pull the panel the rest of the way out from the front.

However, to get behind to do the pushing, I had to remove the panels below the steering column, which required removal of the small panel on the inside wall that would be by your left foot. It didn't take too long, but it was a little bit tense ... pulling on plastic and hoping that it wouldn't break. There were several screws involved as well.

Hope this keeps you going.

BTW, my mission is to replace the factory JBL radio/CD with an aftermarket Kenwood model. In researching, I found out that if the factory radio is replaced, the Info button on the steering wheel that activates the trip computer will no longer function !?!?!? I tested this by removing the radio/cd unit ... bummer.

No one has posted an answer to that little problem.

Daniel
