Default Canadians get hosed on tires!!!

I have been shopping for tires- Yokohama AT's to be exact. 265/70/17

Around Calgary they are give or take $1500.00 all in. My first call Stateside they are $692.00 All in.

Does anyone know if there are any issues getting tires installed and crossing the border? I will tell them at the crossing and pay the GST. Half price after exchange and tax??? We get hosed up here!!!!!!

You mentioned "give or take" which implies you did get multiple quotes, but despite the inequity in prices it still pays to shop around the local places. More of them are aware of cross border activity and at least try to compete. They are still not there yet, but sometimes it helps. Who did you RFQ stateside?

When I said "give or take" there was maybe $100 either way within 6 quotes I got her- I have been shopping lots here in Calgary. All places are within 10%. The first and only place I called in the US was OK tire in Great falls. We go down there anyhow once a year, looks like new tires will be coming back.

Just drive in some mud before you cross the border. They will never know the tires are new. At least that is what I am planning on doing.

Personally, i get the tires shipped to the nearest UPS store in the US (1 hour drive), and go get em myself. Drive down, pick em up, drive back and delcare em. Pay the tax and go home. Get em mounted when i have time at a local shop.

Did this recently when i picked up a set of ramps for loading my bike in the bed, my nfab steps and a set of tires for a guy who went down with me.

I buy all my expensive stuff from the states. Motorcycle parts, car parts, home theater equipment, etc. Whats nice is many sites offer free / cheap shipping inside the US, which saves you a nice amount.

You're only paying tax when you bring it across so you might as well declare it. I always do since i don't want to mess up my security clearance if i got caught sneaking stuff across. That and the 5 year ban from the USA wouldn't help my wallet when it comes to future shipping. and i ALWAYS get searched coming across :P

Taxes run up hill.

If I buy a product and have to pay GST, when I sell it, I'd like to get the amount I paid PLUS the amount I paid for GST, then the next person pays GST on the total amount and so on.

I just did this with a new set of tires from rimzoneonline.com I will end up being around 65% of the cost of buying new here in Canada .... crazy...Canadians are being robbed blind....Also, having 20" tires as well does not help in keep prices down either....

I agree, we do get hosed, I am planning on driving to Buffalo Ny to get tires for my truck and snow tires for my wifes civic.
I bought my Tacoma last year in the states, I saved lterally $13000.00. I also just bought a ATule bike rack, it was almost $300.00 cheaper in Buffalo (1hr drive) then were I live (Toronto). I also bought my ARE Cap across the border ($700 cheaper)
I always declare things when coming across the border, the way I look at it you have to pay tax on the higher price if bought in Canada, when declaring you only pay tax on the US amount.

Shawn

Well, looks like it's not just us (consumers) getting hosed on tire prices.

My brother-in-law used to be a tire guy, so he called up his buddies and got THEIR cost for tires. Some of these guys run their own shops, and the price that the tires are going for in the states are in some cases up to 80$ a tire cheaper than they get them for. The word from one of the owners was "Where do you get them for that price? I'm gonna order all my stock from there!"

Wonder how the UPS store would react when a couple hundred tires from tirerack show up at once for one guy hahaha

I am one of the lucky ones on this forum. I live 10 miles to the USA border, the first town across the border is another 8 miles. Most of my purchases come from the USA, and get shipped to the small town gas station in North Dakota. As a bonus, i can get a tank of gas alot cheaper too!
They have the price posted on the side of the cash register in Litres. Yesterday when i was there, it was 85 cents/L versus $1.179 here in Estevan Sask.
