K&N air filter good or bad?

I bought a K&N air filter for my 2004 S and i've noticed that I get about 60 - 70 miles more per gas tank than before, but not really much HP increase. Maybe it's all in my head.
With that in mind, i've also read on some sites that there is some data showing that the K&N only filter 25% of dirt and other particles.
I am very happy with the increase in miles per tank, but also don't want S**T getting into my engine either.
Has anyone else heard this about K&N's?

Does this go for CAI's then too?
