Default Check engine light malfunction

Two days ago the check engine light came on in my 95 Corolla 1.8.
When I tried to pull the codes by jumping the TE1 and E1, nothing happens.
The check engine light comes on but no codes flash. Not even the steady flash of system ok.
Has anyone else had this problem?
Does anyone know how to fix?
Thanks in advance

does the engine light come on with the key on the "ON" position? Is the check engine bulb good?
if it is are you sure you made contact in TE1 and E1

Thanks mustang67408,
Thats what happens when you have your father-in-law hovering over your shoulder trying to help since he's "done it so many times before", plus the Autozone picture has it backwards also.
It gave a code of 71 which is the egr system, so I'm going to check it out.

Again, thank you, and I'll post back with my results.

The jumper wire will NOT work on a 97.
TE1 & E1 are for setting timing only. You're going to need a scan tool to read your codes.

Sorry for the long delay in replying. Got a code 71 - egr system operation malfunction. Tested system and had to replace the egr valve. Check engine light came back a few days later and drove me nuts for a while since testing all the other components tested o.k.
Finally tucked my tail and went to a friends mechanic that said the vsv is usually the problem. Told him that it tested o.k. and left the car in his care. He called back 2 days later saying he replaced the vsv and no more check engine light.
$75 well spent. Passed emissions test with better than average results. Fuel economy jumped from 230 to 300 miles per fill up.

I humbly ate crow and re-positioned myself on the ladder of success. Damned stubborn bullheaded Aries...

Thanks to all here at Tundrasolutions.com for the help.
I probably won't be back since the car was sold and replaced with a Chrysler 300C.
Hemi 5.7 liters of tire spinning, shove you back in your seat, gotta keep my right foot in check fun. So much for fuel economy.
But I am looking at an older 2005 Tundra because I like the access cab, even though the rear seats are useless except for grocery bags.

So for now, talk to you later...Ed
