I'm a proud new owner of an 08 corolla CE 5 speed. I paid $14.400 for it + tax, etc....
You're smart to be getting a commuter car, i think everyone needs one these days. Especially with gas expected to hit $4/ gallon by christmas here in Utah.
I've read some posts here on TS that folks are actually seeing 40 mpg out of these cars.
New real world mileage is: 28/37 vs. automatic at 26/35. This is why i went with the 5 speed, plus i saved $500.
Here is my vote:
1- Corolla for it's great reputation, and little maintenance & a timing chain.
2- Civic also with a good rep.
3- Sentra--known to be a good car.
4- Hyundai--although i think they're disposable after 100k.
5- Focus---not big on anything from the big 3.
Just my 2 cents.
You have an 07 tundra also? Love the truck, but at 14/15 mpg city.........uh i think i'll bomb around in the corolla. And i really don't enjoy giving chevron $2000 per month. For 6 vehicles though, but still.
I agree with the above post, although I do think the newer model Hyundai's are better now than the disposable cars they once where.
The civic- great car,but you won't get one below 17,000 unless its the stripped down DX model that has no a/c and crank windows, plus no radio if I recall.
The corolla is outdated in design, but who cares it's a gas sipper, and reliable as the day is long.I've seen ads in my area for 14,500 with the A/T,probably could be had even cheaper with a 5-speed.
I've test drove the Sentra and it is way over priced for what you get (and yes I own a Nissan Titan so I'm not biased to Nissan).
The Focus isn't a bad car,but it's not a Toyota, and the gas mileage isn't as good as the Corolla.I will say the motor is pretty peppy, but I think it's a Mazda designed motor, which is a plus in my book.
Honestly, you aren't going to beat the corolla as far as price, gas mileage,fit/finish,and reliability....although you may take a look at the Toyota Yaris sedan, although it's cheaper, they don't have as much room to deal off the MSRP as they do with the Corolla.
OnlyToyotaforme, I'm with you,gas IS NOT going to get any cheaper, and with vehicles like the Tundra, and Titan it's a no-brainer these days to not have a economy car in the drive.I love my Titan (for the most part) but the gas bill to drive 25 miles one way is raping me,heck I bet what I save in gas would pay for a 3rd vehicle like the corolla.I'm getting really close to dropping the hammer and getting a corolla with a stick.

yes I do have a 2007 Tundra and I love it but it is 2 months old and it has a little over 7,000 miles on it I drive alot and I am thinking I should get me a commuter car to put those miles on and drive the truck when I get bored with the car plus the gas prices suck!!!!!!!
I am looking at a 2008 corolla but I think I want automatic the sticker is 15,920.00 this is the stripped down one I figure I can get it for $14,500.00 maybe cheaper

Gotta have a/c, power windows & cruise.

Yeah, the corolla is the same old corolla & outdated. But i don't beleive the good things have dropped on them. $14500 for the auto? That's what i paid for the 08 stick. So i didn't get that great of a deal?
But i think all the 08 corolla's have cruise, power windows, a/c, & tilt wheel. Mine does and it's a CE. Don't have anti lock brakes, or vsc, or any additional air bags though.

Mazda motor? What about the tranny & everything else?

The Yaris was the same price for me here anyway. Mainly because it didn't have the $750 toyota rebate. And that 1.5L is a little weak IMO. It's not weak, sorry it's slightly underpowered. Great motor, just underpowered.

I guarantee you'd be able to pay for the payment on one, just in the gas savings alone!
A couple years ago, i paid $4000 cash for a 99 corolla (now daughters car), and with just the gas savings, paid for that car in 9 months. Now she's paying me for the car. ........Hope she don't read this.
I say go for it.
I really like the stick myself. Easy to shift, and the car actually lugs pretty well. Like taking corners in 3rd gear instead of going to 2nd. And on the freeway with the cruise set, it holds speed really well on the hills in 5th.
And keep in mind if you get the auto, it has the new WS tranny fluid. The stick has good ole 75/90 gear oil & is very easy to change.
And i should get at least 100k out of the clutch, i would say.

It sucks to not be able to drive my truck as much. But sometimes you got to do what you got to do.
Hell, the corolla takes 4.4 qts of oil, the tires are 1/4 price of tires for the truck, no rear end & transfer oil to change, no grease earks.
And best of all now is, you can drive over twice the distance on the same amount of gas.
So you can safely say that the money you spend on gas can be cut in half!

That's better than my deal. I paid $14400 for the stick. I don't know if i'd call a car with cruise, a/c, power windows & locks, and tilt a stripped down model though. But i guess it would be stripped w/o vsc, anti lock brakes, jbl system, side airbags, or wheels.
Just remember....the stick mileage ratings are 28/37 and the auto is 26/35. So 2 mpg difference in the two. And these are the new government mandated numbers, not the old ones.
Sounds like you got a great deal on yours.I'm guessing the people that ran the 13,997 add for the auto Corolla was just doing that to get the old "bate and switch" on them, yeah, a couple of people will come in and stick to his guns and buy the 13,997 corolla, but several will drive out with a 25,000 Camry when they leave,so the couple of people take the cheap corolla (like me and you) others will opt for the higher Camry, or even worse. (as in price I mean worse, not quality)a Avalon.
Take the Mazda building the the Focus motor with a grain of salt, because I read that in a forum, although you might look up the Ford Focus on Wikipedia and it should give you more detailed information on it.I think its platform is on something Volvo designed, which is another company Ford owns.
I agree with you, yeah the Corolla is the same old corolla, but thats a good thing IMO.No you arean't going to beat anyone in a drag race, or get any looks from some pretty young girls, but its perfect for frugal people that want to keep miles off their "pride & joy," and save BIG TIME on gas..... its a win-win.
Below if the link to the 13,997 corolla with auto, just look to the left for specials/view our current ad/then open up a PDF file with Adobe.

The rebate where I live is $1,000
also I am not sure that it has power anything I didnt look
You can get an 08 Yaris Sedan with power everything and a 5 speed for $13.655 (and that's MSRP), built right on the Toyota website. I would think you could get it for less if you're a good haggler. We bought ours back when they were first released in the US market for $14,500. 28,000 miles later we love the gas mileage and it is pretty comfortable to take on long trips. I use Mobil 1 oil and generally see 35-40 mpg (depending on how much city and highway time it sees).
We chose the Yaris over the Corolla simply because we could get one with all the power options for much less than a Corolla. It doesn't look like that's the case now though.

I originally wanted the Yaris, just because it isn't the same old boring corolla of yesteryear, & it is built in japan. And the motor has been known to be very good.
According to my salesman, the yaris is more only because of the tariffs, because they are built in Japan.
That's nice to know that the yaris is as nice as you say. I figured it would be. We just went for the cheapest one at the time. I guarantee you, if the yaris would have been less, we would have gotten it.
This car is strictly an inexpensive bomb around vehicle, and has proven itself over many years to be very reliable. Not taking anything away from the yaris, cause i'm sure it's just as good.
Bottom line is this: they're going to pay themselves off in 3 years or so, just in fuel savings alone.
Right now a stripped 08 CE in this area with a 5spd can be had for 13,500, LE's with the 5 spd and the power options (windows, locks, CC) can be had for 14,500.
Dirt cheap machines to run, but not as stylish as the Civics and no standard ABS or side impact airbags. I've been looking a little and I think you can get a 5spd LX Civic for around 16,500.
I run an average of 40-45k miles a year. After dropping 90K on my 03 Tundra in 2 years, and then Katrina, I ran out and bought a used 03 CE in Sept. of 05 for 10.8K. They were few and far between at that time, and dealers would not deal on them. With the prices they way they are on the new ones at the moment I'm tempted to pick one up as mine has 118K on it now. I've averaged 39mpg year round in the Corolla (36/37 in the winter 40/42 in the summer), it has paid for itself in saved gas money, and my truck hasn't been run in the snow the last 2 winters .
