Corolla MatrixGeneral discussion forum for the Toyota Corolla and Toyota Matrix.
This is a discussion thread titled "Check Engine Light On", within the Corolla Matrix forum, part of the Cars & Vans Forums category.
I have a 2000 Toyota Corolla CE Sedan with 74,700 miles on it. I was gonna check my oil yesterday and when I pulled my hood release inside the car, it broke, I eventually got it to release the hood but ever since then, my check engine light has come on and hasn't gone off. Could this cause the check engine light to come on and stay?
NO, have the code read. Those auto parts stores usually do it for free.
Post the code here and we can assist you. Don't listen to the people at thoses auto parts places, (IMO) they have very limited diagnostic skills.

my friend has a 2000 Corolla that has had the engine on, except for when reset by mechanic a few times. The code is PO 300, random misfire. Her mechanic has checked out EVERYTHING many times, can't find anything. Any suggestions? thanks. Anne

Have them try running a product called "SEAFOAM" thru the engine to help break up the excessive carbon on the tops of the pistons. Water also works well, but you have to be very careful, this can cause damage if not done properly.
P0300 is a RANDOM MISFIRE and excessive carbon builup can cause this and be very frustrating to pinpoint.

I've been chasing the same code in my Silverado for a while. Here's some things to start with. Check for vacuum leaks, change plugs and wires, fuel filter and maybe fuel pump if the rest doesn't do it. I've already checked for vacuum leaks on the truck, fuel filter and plugs will be next.
Some things to start with on a P0300 code: vacuum leaks, change plugs and wires, change fuel filter and maybe fuel pump if that don't get it. Could also be a loose intake. I've been chasing the same code on my Silverado for a while. Checked for leaks, plugs and fuel filter are next.
