Default '05 Corolla Occasional Wind "Whistle" At Higher Speeds

In a strong head wind or gust, at highway speeds (70 mph +) the noise is like blowing through a blade of grass held between your hands. Tried taping the top windshield seal outside, no luck. Anyone else experienced this? I had the same noise in the same conditions with my 2003 model as well. I can't seem to pinpoint it but it sounds like it's coming from the top windshield area, by the rear view mirror area. I've read news groups where other Corolla owners have experienced this noise as well, but can't find a cause and/or solution.

Although annoying, this is almost certainly (and unfortunately) normal and nothing to really worry about. Alot of cars when they get up to moderate speed have some sort of annoying wind noise leak into the cabin. Maybe it's just the way the rubber seal fits against the body or the way the air moves above the body, but I'm pretty sure it's normal. My '87 corolla (admittedly a few generations of weather-sealing technology behind yours!) has the same thing going on, only around the side doors. When I get up to 65 or 70 mph, it whistles a little and sometimes if there's a strong gust, it'll sound as though there is no seal at all.
Not to worry, this shouldn't cause you to lose sleep. And if the seal seems to work (i.e., there's no rain leak, etc) it'll just be an irk to live with.

But hey, I always say it's these little quirks that give our mobiles character!

I had a Subaru a few years back that did something similar. Turns out that when you cranked the driver's side window up, it was stopping about 1/8 inch from the top, which let air blow in at high speeds.

Subaru made an adjustment to the window crank mechanism under warranty, and that took care of the problem.
