Default wierd corolla sound!

Have a 2006 ce automatic with 37000 miles on it. Just recently when I start it in the morning and put it in reverse, it makes a wierd growling noise. The noise seems to come from the center console area. It only happens when it's cold and it's the first start up of the day and in reverse. I don't accelerate in reverse, only idle. As soon as i put it in drive or neutral it goes away!! Anybody???? Thnx
Keith

My wife's car did the same thing, but it ended up going away. I traced it back to the spring loaded exhaust flange at the front cat. I took it to the dealer since it was under warrenty, but they couldn't duplicate it. Haven't heard it ever since.

Sounds like an exhaust vibration. Could even be the cat. shroud. Mine did this too.
The cat. and shrould is located under the center console, when yu go into reverse th engine shifts slightly and is normal...but as a result the exhaust will shift as well. If the Integrity of the exhaust is compromised in any way , there will be a shudder or loud vibration as the pipes or cat or shroud hit the chassis.
Just some ideas.

worn engine and transmission mounts will also cause the exhaust to shift more than it should.
