Corolla MatrixGeneral discussion forum for the Toyota Corolla and Toyota Matrix.
This is a discussion thread titled "08 corolla 5 speed grind?", within the Corolla Matrix forum, part of the Cars & Vans Forums category.
I have a 08 corolla le 5 speed. With 500 miles on it. When the tranny is cold (sitting for atleast 8 hour or more) The tranny with gring going it to 3 gear. It just started this about 100 mile ago. Any input?
It is about 30deg here. Rochester ny.
I would consider changing to a Synthetic Hypoid gearbox lube of the correct OEgrade and viscosity.
I had similar issues in very cold weather.
It worked really better in all my Toyota standard trans 5-speeds.
The cold weather is just where yu will benefit from Synthetic Hypoids.
Since it is under warranty ,yu can just let the Dealer Figure it out. First thing is to check the Oil Level!!!!
Does the full range of shifting feel stiff and slow when throwing gears at very cold temps? Shifter feels stiff???
Hopefully the fluid level is not low for whatever reason...being an 08 and all.

I've almost posted the same complaint about my 08 5 speed. Third gear is thee worst in this car. Even when warm, i think it should shift smoother than it does.
I have full range of shifting feel and it don't feel stiff. It's just when you go into third gear is when it feels like it's grinding.
I think i'm going to switch to full synthetic in mine right away.
Thanks for the heads up.
Oh, my brother has the same exact car and it does the same thing. Must be the fluid they put in em that's different.
My 94 camry (built in Japan), didn't feel this way at all.
Mobil 1 75W-90 synthetic is notorious for causing notchy shifting and grinding in Toyota manual trannys. So are conventional hypoid GL-5 gear lubes although they are not as bad as Mobil 1 synthetic.
A GL-4 (NON-hypoid) gear lubricant will reduce grinding. Pennzoil makes a product called "GL-4 80W-90 Gear Lubricant" but it's only available in 5 gallon pails.
Nissan makes a GL-4 gear lube in quarts so you might try a Nissan dealer. Ditto for Hyundai and Mazda.
Lastly, if you can afford it, RedLine makes a MT-90 75W-90 GL-4 gear lubricant for about $10 a quart specifically for manual transmissions. Toyota owners of all kinds from owners of 1970's Celicas to modern day Toyotas reports markedly easier shifting action with this lube. There is some concern about whether or not it adequately protects transmission bearings from wear because it does not contain traditional sulfur-phosphorous anti-wear additives, but so far the transmission in one of my Toyotas has run it for 100,000+ miles without a problem.
Well The tranny shifts fine into 3rd but lets out a grind (when cold). I am going to switch to red line after break in (car has 500 miles on it.) But the dealer is goin to get it first. I am sure they will tell me that they can't duplecate the problem lol. I will tell them to keep it till they can. Becuase it does it every time I drive it in the moring and when I get out of work (after 8-9 hours). Ps I have been babying the hell out of it to trying to get the best mpg I can. So far I reached 44.6 and it is winter here in rochester ny. =)

Let us know what the dealer says, will you?
That is damn good mileage.
I have yet to do a lot of hiway driving, and the best i've seen is 36.2 in mixed driving on the first tank. I now have about 2000 miles on it, and i'm running 5w30 mobile one synthetic & OEM filters. I get the filters from trdparts4u.com for like $30 a ten pack w/ free shipping, & no tax.
Not bad. I figure the car should pay itself off in about 2-3 years, just in gas savings alone.
Plus i can keep my other nice rigs in the garage where they stay clean in these wet, cold winter months.
Ok the dealer has had it for 1 week and to my suprise can't duplicate the problem. I told them the first 2 times to keep trying but they still can't get it to grind. ( I am sure it is sitting in the parking lot the whole time=). So I am going to pick it up tomorrow with nothing fixed. I did bring it in for my free oil change and had them put my customer suplied mobil 1 in it @ 1000 miles. I am going to switch to redline when i get home.
Yes, it is quite obvious. I was looking at another thread with a similer transmission situation, and they discussed changing their gear oil, and many reported a big improvement in the transmission. There are many products out there that may help your situation. So ask around, keep posting here, and let us know how everything goes. DEFINITELY show the video to your dealer, that is your proof right there that there is a problem. Good luck, and keep us updated!

Use BG Syncroshift 2 full synthetic GL-4 75w-80 for your manual Corolla. You will thank me in person...Changed my gear oil with my first oil change on my '09 S and it is the smoothest Crayolla (lol) on the block!
I've been running Amsoil 75w90 Sever gear lube in the diff now for about 10k miles and it's not helped the 3rd gear grind much at all. It shifts quite smoothly in all other gear's and some of the time even 3rd when hot. But when cold it grinds quite badly. Come to find out this lube has some friction modifiers in it which is not good for a tranny, and can cause notchy shifting.
I just talked to my amsoil rep, and he suggested the Manual trans gear lube ( MTG ) which is a GL-4 lube, not a GL-5. Since my owners manual calls for either, i just ordered some MTG and will put it in as soon as i get it.
Will post updates to let you all know the difference.
Kathyricks...........can you elaborate on what you know about the GL-4 lubes you suggested?
