Product Enhancements
Engine Performance:
The 2009MY Corolla will be powered by a 1.8L Dual Overhead Cam (DOHC), 16-valve Dual Independent VVT-i engine. The engine has been further refined to deliver 132 horsepower, an increase of 6 hp from the previous generation, and 128 lb.-ft. torque, an improvement of 6 lb.-ft. torque. Fuel economy also improves over the prior generation to an EPA estimated 27 city/35 highway. The all-new XRS grade will be powered by a 2.4L Dual Overhead Cam (DOHC), 16-valve VVT-i engine. Not only does this engine deliver 158 horsepower and 162 lb.-ft. torque, it also achieves a notable EPA estimated fuel economy rating of 22 city/30 highway. All five grades come with Electric Power Steering (EPS) which helps eliminate hydraulic-assist components that can reduce fuel economy.
Safety:
All 2009MY Corollas will come equipped with standard Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) with Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA). Safety has been further improved with standard driver and passenger front seat–mounted side airbags and front and rear side curtain airbags. Active front seat head rests will also come standard on all Corollas. Additionally, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRAC) are now equipped with an Off switch and will be available on all five grades.
Comfort & Convenience:
All five grades will be equipped with an auxiliary audio port (for i-Pod and MP3 players) and an XM Satellite antenna. A touch-screen navigation system with AM/FM/CD player with WMA/MP3 playback capability, satellite capable (requires receiver & subscription) with six speakers and available XM NavTraffic, will be offered on XLE, S, and XRS grades. For added convenience, all Corollas will come with tilt and telescopic steering wheels and 60/40 split rear seats.

Well...I don't see a manual tranny LE listed? If that's really the case then I'll be switching to a Civic this summer when I go looking to replace my current Corolla.
I have owned a few Corollas (and LOVED them) and my mother still owns one. Now that they are built in a Chevy plant by Union workers, I doubt I would ever buy another one.

My 03 has been a heck of a machine, and it's still impressive at 123K miles. It's a CA NUMI production car, I have no worries about the build quality at that plant. My frustration has been the inability to get the options I want on the car when it comes to replacing it. I really want a sunroof, alloy wheels and a 5spd manual. The only real option for getting that in the current model is to buy an S model with the stupid looking ground effects, because I've never seen an LE equiped like that. You can't get a sunroof or alloys on the CE. Honda offers that combination in the EX Civic, and they are not difficult to find. Now it looks like they dropped the 5spd in the LE all together, meaning that if you want a manual tranny you either have to buy a stripped econobox base model, or a model with some cheesy tagged on ground effects. I had really hoped Toyota would step up with a machine to match the current Civic in terms of style and optional equipment. The 09 Corolla looks like another appliance offering from Toyota.
I was kind of disappointed in those specs since I currently have a '94 Nissan Altima as my "commuter/beater" car. It's a 2.4L, DOHC (non variable timing) and is rated at 155 HP and 30 mpg hiway with the 4-sp auto tranny.
I would have thought Toyota with the newer technology could squeeze out a little better numbers than that on a 2.4L 4 banger ... still decent though.
