Default 99 corolla blown engine

Hi, I am new to list. The engine in my 99 corolla went last Nov. Repairman said the piston was in a million pieces in the bottom of oil pan and he had never seen anything like it. No real car problems before that. It has made a "I am needing a little oil" tick off and on for years since I got it. I got it in 2003. Anyway, anyone ever heard of a toyota engine blowing like that? My son was driving to the train station about 1 1/2 hrs away. Got about 30 min from destination and he saw a puff of smoke from the rear, the engine revved right up and then just died. It fried the alternator. Not sure if this is connected but the mechanic thought what came out of the radiator was a oil in the water. The felt lining the inside of hood always had oil on it, but you could never tell if it was fresh or not. I had the oil checked on a reg. basis and asked about the felt having oil in it.....never any answers. I have never even heard of a toyota engine blowing. My now ex drove the car and I had a van for a period of about 7-8 months before I got it again. This happened within the 5 month period following. Ok.........so I finally get enough money to replace the engine. The new engine is in, but it makes a funny sound. Almost like the fan.......not sure how to describe......the fan is getting resistance. And I noticed when I started it, started smooth, but then this sound starts and you know how some vehicles sound different, after idling for a bit? Almost like it looses energy very slightly, enough to make a change in sound? If anyone has any insight it would be much appreciated. I am a single mom of 4 kids at home still and haven't been able to find a job since my ex left......anyway, don't have the money to take in to dealership, but I do trust the guy working on it. Seems to know any kind of engine. Anyway, I had to pay for all the parts and I don't have the funds to take to a professional garage. He does have access to newer technology so if it needs some sensor testing or something like that, he could take to his friends place. Again, any guidance here would be appreciated. Daddysprincess5
